In L. Frank Baum's Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, there is "the King of the Ryls (plant sprites), who lived among the gay (read: merry) flowers and luscious fruits of Valencia."
Must have seemed pretty exotic for an Anglo-Saxon Victorian reader, right?
