SARA BOERO: IL VESTITO MASCHILE DELLA SIRENETTA

Finally Sara Boero did her analysis of the Little Mermaid and she focused on the queer elements in the tale and what she calls "un vestito maschile per andare a cavallo" (vestito maschile: mandsdragt / man's suit). But she notes that most Italian translations like Ippocampo (translator?) have "un vestito da amazzone," a dress for an amazon (female rider) with a skirt, for riding sidesaddle, which is the polar opposite of what Andersen says - and Boero also highlights that the many excursions on horseback and mountaineering that they do together (the prince and the Little Foundling exploring the land kingdom, both of them in breeches) are something two young men, whether a couple, friends, or brothers, would rather do in Andersen's nineteenth century. And she even says that these excursions would definitely be something that Andersen himself and Edward Collin (his patrons' son and secret lover, the inspiration for the prince) would have done together - there are no mountains in Denmark, but they would definitely ride around the countryside together, scale dunes, etc.

Super carino.

My comment, questions to Sara Boero:

But where does Sara Boero get her "vestito maschile / da paggetto" from? The original Danish or an English or Italian translation? And who did the Ippocampo translation with the amazon's dress?

SARA BOERO RISPONDE:

Ciao!

SALMACIS AND HERMAPHRODITUS - Nina McLaughlin

 SALMACIS AND HERMAPHRODITUS

S: All the women of the woods they told me. Pick up the bow. Run the paths. Hunt with us. I saw them. Sweaty. Bruised. Snarled hair stuck with burrs. Animal blood below their nails, dried like ashes on the private part of their wrists. No thank you. It’s good to challenge yourself, said the naiads. Rest feels better when you work for it, they said. I worked for it. The women of the woods chased animals. I had a different hunt.

H: I was fifteen years old.

S: While they chase boar, deer, rabbit, beaver, bear, while their skin is snagged on prickers, while their muscles burn from crouching silent and unmoving so not to startle a stag, I lounge by my spring. I comb my hair. I touch myself. I wait.

H: I’d never kissed a girl.

S: I positioned myself in the morning on moss. My robe ate the dew. My breasts are big as beehives, not like the other naiads, who sweat and run all day, who end up with little lemon breasts. Lying on my side, the softness of my belly dropped, the wide roundness of my hip rising as result. My right-hand fingers in my hair, my left-hand fingertips on moss, sunlight through the trees dancing on my body. Pure allure. The birds and small soft creatures look upon me. They don’t get close. The eyes of the squirrels are black. The nervous birds’ bones I could crush in my palm, crack their little twig ribs and mash the air right out. They don’t get close enough. My body rises and falls slowly with my breath. I watch the sky move on the spring.

S: And then he arrived. He came through the trees into the morning sun by the spring, tentative as a fawn, and I liked this. Son of Aphrodite, son of Hermes, are you lost? Let me help you feel at home, beautiful boy. Let me distract you from your fears. I looked at him and oh, this beautiful young man, this meat. All verge. All cusp. Any minute he would fall from the high ledge of boyhood and land in the bristled plain of being man.
And I liked this, too, this almost there but not all the way, this in-between. Long legs with muscle bulge above the knee. The bones of his ankles like arrowheads. The spread of his chest and its smoothness, I imagined no hair yet on this young man. His clavicles across his shoulders like sticks to bang a massive drum. The juicy swell of his lower lip, that bulge, the perfect seagull M of his upper lip. Eyes not black like the squirrels but pristine as my spring, and revealing him right away untouched. Already I was too excited. I needed calm. I smoothed my robe, positioned it off my left shoulder, pulled my long hair over my right. I bit and wet my lower lip.
H: There was a lady at the edge of the water. Her legs were thick, a lot of her beneath a robe. I was seeing too much of her. She did not look like my mother. There was something hungry in her eyes.

S: Your mother is lucky to have had you inside her, I said.

H: I don’t remember what that was like.

S: Your brothers and sisters are lucky, too, if you have them, to be able to look upon you as their sibling.
  H: I don’t have them.

S: And very lucky was the nursemaid whose tits you tongued and sucked, whose breasts you emptied. And here I moved my hand down and absently touched my own, felt my nipple firm against my palm, just the way I wanted it. And I saw his eyes follow my hand, just the way I wanted it.

  H: I don’t remember—

S: Luckiest of all is your girlfriend or your bride-to-be, because I can only assume you have one. It’s all right. Oh, it’s all right. Don’t worry. We can love each other secretly. No one will know except the birds and the squirrels and the leaves, and they’re voiceless when it comes to this sort of thing, I promise.

  H: This sort of thing?

S: The blood rose to his cheeks. And I suspected that blood was gathering elsewhere as well. And my stomach dropped into my hips in that expectant throb, that heated pulse that precedes the best thing.

H: I watched my mother butcher a rabbit once. She punched its head to break its neck and the lights went out of its eyes, and then she knifed it open and tugged out all its guts, all those dark wet interior parts. She tossed them to the dogs. They lapped the floor for so long. I didn’t like it. I was seeing more than I should see. I didn’t want to know. I had a queasy feeling. Now I felt this way again.

S: Here. Don’t worry. Here. Just a small kiss.

H: I hadn’t seen looks before like the ones she gave. They reached into my guts with fingers on the inside that tickled. It didn’t feel right. And also at the same time it felt like something I’d been approaching, maybe since the beginning, and I had a sense somehow that this is what I faced, this was what was coming for me, this new realm was opening to me, these looks and swells and smells. But I wasn’t ready.

S: Like this. Here. Just a small kiss. Like a sister or a friend. Like this.

  H: I don’t think I—

S: Here. Just quiet. You don’t have to worry. Like this.

  H: I took steps back.

S: He took steps back. Though the hunt had begun as soon as he stepped into the clearing, now in earnest it began. They don’t know it, and I don’t tell them, but the naiads’ pleasure in the hunt is the same as mine—tension and the release of it. That’s all I’m ever after. They chase and stalk and aim and shoot and if they do it right, they catch their game and kill it dead. Thrill born out of effort. If in the woods you were to pause on the path and a deer emerged from the trees and instead of leaping away in frighted flight, it walked toward you, brown dew eyes glittering all fearless, and it offered itself to you, displaying its flank in easy range—where would be the challenge? And therefore, the satisfaction? Better to leave the eager deer standing there offering itself and try to find one that will make you earn your pleasure. I’ve never wanted the ones that offer themselves up to me, who beg to touch my beehive breasts, who tell me they want to lose themselves in my soft thick curves. Too easy. No eventual moment of surrender when the fight leaves them and they’re yours. This is what I live for. I do not need a quiver or a bow.

H: I kept stepping backward away from her touching and kissing.

S: Those steps back, that resistance, it heated me and made me juiced more than any sort of beauty, more than any sort of sculpted form or shining smile or brains or smell.

  H: She just kept coming.

S: He stepped back and I felt the wet between my legs. You don’t want it? I will make you want it. Here. Just let me—doesn’t it feel good? There? Doesn’t that feel good? Like this? So gentle, so slow. Let me—

H: Listen, if you don’t stop I’m going to leave.

S: Okay, okay, okay. I stepped back.

  H: She stepped back.
S: It’s all yours. Enjoy the spring. I leave you to it. I slipped away. He thought me gone. He couldn’t see me and that was fine. I crouched like the naiads do, my knees on the leaves, waiting for my meat the way they wait. I opened my robe and felt the weight of my breasts in my hands. I peered between the leaves. He paced the lip of the spring.

H: I paced the lip of the spring. I tried to calm down. She left. I was glad when she left.

S: He paused, dipped his foot into the water, I could feel him feel it.

H: I touched the water with my toes. I wanted to be in it.

S: He wanted to be in it.

H: I pulled off my shirt.

S: He pulled off his shirt and folded it and placed it on a stump. A pimple on his right shoulder, raised and red. Young men, their oils.

H: I felt the sun on my shoulders. I missed my mother.

S: He bent and he undid his pants and he slipped out of them and I saw all of him.

H: I took off my breeches.

S: My teeth clenched to trap the moan.

  H: I dove in.

S: He’s in! His whole naked self. Now was the time. I let my robe fall and dashed waterward and slipped in.

  H: There’s a rippling in the water.

  S: I swam quickly.

  H: What’s there?

S: I wrapped myself around him.

H: She’s wrapped herself around me. All at once all around me. I didn’t want it. Get away. I tried to get away.

  * * *

S: He was everywhere against me, and he was trying to get away. I moaned to feel all his muscles tensed against me, fighting me off, trying to swim. I wrapped round tighter. Like this, just still, like this, I’m yours, be calm.

H: She’s all around me and I felt sick. It’s too animal. I didn’t want to know. It’s as though she’s all tentacles, some massive octopus, some kraken pulling at me, tugging me in toward her, her legs knot themselves around my legs and she opens herself and is rubbing all over me. I don’t want this. STOP.

S: STOP, he said, and I held him tighter. I pressed myself into him. We both breathed heavily. I knew any second would come the surrender. I have to hang on a little longer, a little tighter. I’ve been here before. They always surrender. They always give in. Like this, like this. Just relax. You’re going to like it. I know you’ll really like it. Trust me, you can trust me. Relax, it’s all right. Just give it to me.

H: No no no no no. Stop. STOP.

S: I rubbed and rubbed myself on him and I was so close, I was so so close, and his arm was pressed against my breast and trying to push me off and I opened and tightened and all the muscles in my hips were tight and clenching and it was almost I can feel it almost there there there there oh god, I cried out, oh gods of Olympus please, let us be joined forever, please let us never be apart.

  H: What’s happening?

S: Oh he’s in he’s in. I’m all around him.
S: Oh he’s in he’s in. I’m all around him.

  H: She’s everywhere.

S: He’s in. I’m in. He’s entered me I’ve entered him, the gods gave exactly what I’d wanted. We’re swimming in each other now.

H: I’ve entered her. She’s entered me. Some strange combining.

  S: Entwining.

  H: And entwined.

S: Our bodies joined in the deepest way.

  H: We’re one.

  S: We’re both.

H: This changed home, two forms one body. A she becomes me. Becomes him. I a he become her.

  S: We fondle ourselves

  H: Our self

  S: Like this

  H: Wait I like that

  S: Just like this

  H: Touch me

  S: There

  H: Keep touching

S: My beehive breasts. His waist-down manhood.

  H: We are both,

  S: Blurred and joined,

  H: And neither.

BENJAMIN LACOMBE, ROPA DE HOMBRE EN "LA SIRENITA"

BENJAMIN LACOMBE:

Part IV: The Two Princes

The Snow Queen

Part IV: The Two Princes

“If I have it right, it seems that he’s forgotten ... for a Prince. Listen, listen, this is what I heard in town. In this Kingdom there is a Prince who is uncommonly clever, and from what ... told me it’s no wonder! He’s read all the newspapers in the world and forgotten them again, that’s how clever he is! Well, not long ago he was sitting on his throne, and that’s by no means as much fun as people suppose, so he started humming an old tune and the chorus happened to run, why oh why shouldn’t I get married?
“A ... told you this?”
“Oh yes! The town is his home! Anyway, the Prince made up his mind right there and then to marry someone, as soon as he could find the sort of person who could give a good answer when anyone spoke to him, instead of someone who stood around looking impressive. When the rest of the palace heard what he had in mind they were delighted! So anyway, the the newspaper immediately came out with a border of hearts and the initials of the Prince, and you could read an announcement that a presentable person might go to the palace and talk with the Prince. Very innovative town. Didn’t matter if it was a man or a woman. The one who spoke best and seemed the most at home in the palace would be chosen by the Prince as his marital partner.”
 “A-and then what?”
“Men flocked to the palace and there was so much crowding and crushing, but no one was chosen. ... that on the third day, a young man showed up with neither horse nor carriage, and strode boldly up to the Palace. ... the man’s eyes sparkled ..., and he had unusual curly hair and poor clothes.”
“Please, ..., you have to take ... to the Palace! ...”
“That’s easy enough to say - maybe ... can help. But I don’t think they’ll admit ... into the Palace.”
... “Wait for me beside the stile.”
... took off, only to return in the dead of night with a small loaf of bread ..., which he dropped ....
“... his best wishes, and here’s some bread. His ladylove spends her time in the Palace. They have all the bread they need, and .... ... won’t be able to get into the Palace with ..., but the ... ladylove knows of a little back staircase that leads to a bedroom, and she also knows where is the key kept, so ...will take us to it.”
... before ... followed ... into the town. A ... hopped around on the wall of the fountain in the town square, squawking in delight when he saw them coming.
“Hurry, hurry, come.” ... heading towards the Palace garden.
... hurriedly followed ... into the garden, and down the wide promenade, where the leaves were falling from the trees. As the lights in the Palace slowly went out one by one, ... led them to a back door which stood ajar.
... sparkling eyes and curly hair.
...
Now they were on the staircase, and there was a little lamp burning on a cupboard. Next to it stood another ..., smaller than the one who had been leading them here; his ladylove, ... realised.
She cocked her head to look ..., .... “.... If you would kindly take the lamp from beside me, I shall lead the way. We shall keep moving straight ahead, where we aren’t going to run into anyone.”
“To me it feels like someone is on the staircase behind us.” ... said.
Something brushed past ..., and from the shadows on the wall, they looked like horses with spindly legs and waving manes. There were also shadows of huntsmen, ... realised; both male and female on horseback.
“Dreams and nothing more.” The female ... said, her voice soothing. “They come to take the thoughts of their royal masters off to chase. It will give you a good opportunity to see them while they sleep. But I trust that when you rise to high position and power, you will show a grateful heart.”
The male ... clicked his beak. “You’ve no need to say that, love.”
The female ... apologised, and they entered the first room. It was decorated in rose-coloured satin that was embroidered with flowers, and the dream shadows moved so fast now that ... couldn’t see the lords and ladies.
Hall after hall bewildered ..., each one so magnificent that he wondered how ... had managed to make it here.
And after what had felt like forever, the female ... led them to the royal bedroom. The ... did not enter, but ... as he silently stepped into the room; heart slamming against his chest.
Just like every other room in the Palace, it was finely decorated, and in the middle was a large bed with two sleeping figures; one of which .... ... careful as ... pulled the blanket back from the face of the one he could tell had curly hair, and the moment the face was revealed the lamp fell ... and hit the floor with a clatter; the young man’s eyes snapping open at the sudden loud noise.
“Who the -”
“What on Earth is the matter?” The female ... had swept into the room, .... “Is it not who you were looking for?”
... to think that ... would have been here, only based on three traits that they shared?
And that was all they shared, really, because ..., this man’s hair was unruly, messy, dark looser curls.
“Hey, hey, what’s wrong?” The man had climbed out of the bed quickly and rushed over, clamping his hands down onto ...’s shoulders.
The other Prince woke up, and his voice was groggy, laced with sleep as he spoke. “Richard,  what’s going on?”
Richard had managed to calm ... down long enough that they (they being him and his husband William) could convince ... to get into the bed in their place and sleep. .... They were surprisingly not angry that some young stranger had broken into the Palace with the help ... and had woken them up in the night.
In fact, all they could feel for ... was sympathy. They had even praised ... for such a noble deed, but had asked for them not to do it again.
“Poor thing.” William said, looking over his shoulder at the sleeping .... “He has travelled such a long way.”
“Maybe there’s something we can do to help him.” Richard said, raising a hand to stroke the head ... on his shoulder. “We can’t just let him leave dressed like that. He’ll never survive the winter.”
So the following day, they had dressed ... to ... heels in silk and velvet, and had even made sure to get ... some boots and gloves. They had arranged for a carriage to take ... to the next town, where the Prince there would be able to help him further (or so they hoped).
... as Richard helped ... into the carriage. “I hope you find your friend. He’s lucky to have a friend like you.”
“If you find him, be sure to send your raven friend back.” William said, one hand curled around the carriage door. “We would love to hear how this tale turns out.”
“I will.” ... assured them. “Thank you for all your help.”

Part V: The Robber Girl

... had stayed with ... for the first four miles of the carriage ride before he’d decided to go ahead and wait in the next town; a chance to really stretch his .... This left ... alone in the carriage, on the path that rolled into a dark forest. And being made of gold, the carriage caught the attention of some robbers who couldn’t bear it.
They sprang forward, seized the horses, killed the footman and the driver, ...

Once again, Beverly (the only girl of the group, with short fiery red hair, her body looked broader ... in the shoulders. Her skin was tanned softly and her eyes were so green that ...  felt like she had the whole ocean in them.) ... “Now, tell me about ... adventure again. ... Were those Princes really nice? ...

Part VIII: Epilogue
moments before a young woman with short fiery red hair came riding towards them on a magnificent horse that ... recognised belonged to the two princes.
Beverly now sported an array of pistols and blades upon her person, and had grown tired of living with the robbers, so she was setting out on a journey to the North. She ....
... he would catch up with them once he’d been to the Princes’, to tell them of ...’s tale and how ...’d finally found .... ... thanked him for keeping ... company for most of the trip before they parted ways.

(NO MENTION OF THE HONEYMOON IN THE EPILOGUE OF THIS AU; btw the version of TSQ-IV that served as source material is doubtless Jean Hersholt's: the fic like the translation gives 'uhyre klog' as 'uncommonly clever' adding 'and it's no wonder!' and 'navnetraek' as 'the initials', 'by' is rendered as 'town', 'den store allée' becomes 'the wide promenade'... the list of references is endless -- BUT THE "BY" IN THE KINGDOM IN THIS AU BEING A PROVINCIAL TOWN WITH A FOUNTAIN IN ITS ONLY SQUARE AND THE PRINCE/PRINCESS COUPLE BEING GAY, COUPLED WITH PRINCE WILLIAM, THE "PRINCESS" CHARACTER --IN CANON, WILLIAM DENBROUGH FROM STEPHEN KING'S IT 2017--, BEING AN ABSOLUTE MONARCH IN FAVOUR OF FREE LOVE WHO GOES THE EXTRA MILE RESPECT TO GUSTAVUS III AND FREDERICK THE GREAT... <3 OH AWWWW FOR PART IV: THE TWO PRINCES <3 <3 <3 THE KINGDOM SETTING -TOWN, GARDENS, PALACE-, THE PAIRING, THE GAYNESS IN THE QUEERING OF THIS TALE, AND THE NAMES OF THE TWO PRINCES BEING SO SHAKESPEAREAN; AND WILLIAM DENBROUGH/RICHARD TOZIER REALLY HITTING THE SPOT... I CAN PICTURE MYSELF THAT FRONT PAGE WITH THE INITIALS W.D. IN ROCOCO STYLE AND THAT BORDER OF HEARTS... AS WELL AS THE FATEFUL TEST-INTERVIEW... SQUEEEEEE!!! FANART OF WILLIAM AS AN 18TH-C PRINCE AND RICHARD AS A ROMANTIC POET WITH A PINCENEZ?)

BONNIE DUNDEE QUEER PARODY

So this is a parody-filk that has a history behind it. A history that fortunately is not that long. A story that began with my first encounter with this Celtic military song in the Kipling story Her Majesty's Servants and not until now did I think of typing down the Pride parody to which it was made...

To the Lords and Convention Dundee one day spoke;
"Ere the sanction goes down, there are rules to be broke!
So each campy queer who loves free love and me,
let 'em follow the bunnies of Bonnie Dundee!"

Come fill up my cup and come fill up my can,
come thrust out the whores and come call up the men,
uncork that arse-cork and let us go free...
for it's up with the bunnies of Bonnie Dundee!

Dundee he is mounted, rides his bike down the street;
the phones they ring backwards, the doms they do beat,
and the Tories (fascist men!) say; "Just let him be,"
for the town is well rid of that down-low Dundee!

Come fill up my cup and come fill up my can,
come thrust out the whores and come call up the men,
uncork that arse-cork and let us go free...
for it's up with the bunnies of Bonnie Dundee!

There are hills beyond Pentland, and wangs beyond Forth,
there are feys in the south, there are queens in the north!
There are brave rainbow warriors three thousand times three,
fighting high for the bunnies of Bonnie Dundee!

Come fill up my cup and come fill up my can,
come thrust out the whores and come call up the men,
uncork that arse-cork and let us go free...
for it's up with the bunnies of Bonnie Dundee!

Then away to the hills and the caves 'midst the rocks...
Ere I pwn a usurper, I'll couch with a fox!
So tremble, bigwigs, in the midst of your glee;
you have not seen the last of my bunnies and me!

Come fill up my cup and come fill up my can,
come thrust out the whores and come call up the men,
uncork that arse-cork and let us go free...
for it's up with the bunnies of Bonnie Dundee!

Tiefster Schnee...

Willkommen in meinem Herzen...

Das ist meine Geschichte...

Splitterkinder

Meine Hände in Ketten...

Wirst sonst wohl hingerichtet!",

Was blieb mir anderes übrig?

Rutil tat mir Leid.

Das meinen Bann lösen will...

keimte in mir wieder Hoffnung...

Nun wisst ihr was mich umtreibt...

Ihr kennt meine Sorgen und meine Hoffnungen...
Hilft euch das?
Wohl kaum...
