CLEFAIRY and the MACARENA

Not long ago, Karambolage released an episode on the Macarena, choreography and all (in case you had forgotten), the floodgates of Millennial nostalgia rushed open within me, and I remembered a reference to it in the Western dubs of the Pokémon anime:

This is the localisation of the Pokémon (Indigo League) episode "Clefairy and the Moonstone":

...

– Ash: (Trying to translate what Pikachu’s saying) “These Clefairy collect all these rocks and……do the Macarena!”

Ah the Macarena. That won’t ever get dated.

......

(Pikachu seizes a strand of Ash's hair)

– Misty: “What rhymes with 'hair'?”

Brock: “Hey, how about ‘prayer’?”

Yes, everyone, there was a time when 4Kids would actually mention religion.

*******

4Kids Entertainment English dub (the basis for all Western dubs of Kanto and Johto) of Pokémon Indigo League (Season 1, Episode 6: "Clefairy and the Moonstone" In this episode, Ash's Pikachu tries to explain to Ash and the gang what the Clefairy are doing by using charades. Because the original Japanese script relied on heavy cultural references and wordplay, 4Kids had to completely reinvent the dialogue.

💃 The Dance: Obon vs. the Macarena

Original Japanese: Ash guesses that the Clefairy are performing an Obon Dance (Bon Odori), a traditional dance performed during the Japanese Obon festival to honor the spirits of the dead. 4Kids English Dub: Since Western kids in the late '90s wouldn't know what Obon was, 4Kids had Ash guess that the Clefairy "collect all these rocks and... do the Macarena!" (referencing the massive '90s Spanish dance craze)

🧎‍♂️ The Prayer: Kami vs. Hair/Prayer

Original Japanese: Pikachu pulls out a single strand of Ash's hair. In Japanese, the word for hair is Kami (髪). Ash shouts "My hair!", which prompts Brock to realize that Kami is a homophone for the Japanese word for God/Spirit/Deity (神, Kami). This is how they figure out the Clefairy are praying.

4Kids completely cut out the Shinto/religious reference. Instead, they turned it into a simple rhyming game. When Pikachu pulls Ash's hair, Misty asks, "What rhymes with hair?" and Brock replies, "Hey, how about 'prayer'?"

Leading them to deduce that the Clefairy are praying to the Moonstone. 1

It stands as one of the most clever—and hilariously dated—linguistic pivots from the early days of anime localization!

I recall having watched this episode in Valencian, in Spanish, and in Swedish and wondering if it was the Macarena or another dance in the original!

Andersen - a Catholic church in Spain

Andersen, "Story of the Dunes." Here a Nordic cabin boy enters a Catholic church in Andalusia, most surely in Málaga where the author had lived for a while. The culture shock between the Baroque Catholic atmosphere --colourful pictures in golden frames and backgrounds, the Virgin with Child surrounded by candles and bouquets of flowers, the ornate vestments of priests and choirboys-- and the simple foreign cabin boy is described as "glory and beauty" (herlighet og pragt) - Andersen, as a good Romantic, is not appalled by Catholicism, nor does he demonise it, rather he finds it exotic and exciting and beautiful!:

Suddenly he saw before him the mighty portals of a cathedral, with lights streaming out through the twilight of the colonnades, and the fragrance of incense saluting him. Even the poorest beggar in rags could venture to climb those stairs and enter. The sailor who had taken Jörgen ashore went into the church; Jörgen followed, and soon he stood in the sanctuary. Coloured pictures glowed out from golden backgrounds; amid flowers and candles at the altar he beheld the Blessed Virgin holding the Holy Child; priests in their vestments were chanting, while pretty choirboys swung silver censers. What magnificence he saw there! All this glory and beauty, streaming into Jörgen's soul, nearly overpowered him. The church and the faith of his forefathers surrounded him and awakened a chord in his soul, causing tears to come to his eyes. (Jean Hersholt)

Jurgen hardly knew where he was, or which way he went, till he found himself in front of the mighty portal of a cathedral. Light streamed through the dark aisles, and a fragrance of incense was wafted towards him; yet the poorest beggar could venture up the steps into the shrine. Jurgen followed the sailor who was with him into the church, and stood in the sacred edifice. Pictures in golden frames were before him; on the altar stood a figure ot the Virgin, with the child Jesus, surrounded by lights and flowers; priests in festive robes were chanting, and choir-boys, clothed in white, swung the silver censers. What splendour, what magnificence, was here! It streamed in upon his soul, and overpowered him, The church and the faith of his parents touched a chord in his heart, that caused his eyes to overflow with tears. (Victorian translation)

MAL ME SIENTO (Magnus Uggla Filkslation)

 MAL ME SIENTO

Con una Bella Easo,

mi móvil y mi vaso,

me siento sola en el McCafé

mirando a vocalistas,

¿y si me atropellan,

************

Mal me siento,

mal me siento,

feo y viejo,

¡aaagh qué mal me siento!

Mal me siento,

mal me siento,

************************

Mal me siento,

mal me siento,

¡aaagh, qué mal me siento!

Mal me siento,

mal me siento,

Mal me siento,

mal me siento

Mal me siento,

mal me siento,

Třeboň - the estate where learned men spoke with angels

The Midnight Archive once more - and I had to copypaste the name of the town/estate and the lord who lives there/patron of the scholars... Czech has so many diacritics!

... they are saved by a Bohemian lord (Vilém de Rožmberk), one of the richest men in the kingdom, a collector of alchemists with lands in the south. He extracts permission for them to shelter on his estates. And the whole caravan ... rolls into the water town of Třeboň among the carp ponds behind the walls of a friendly castle.
Count what has rolled in through that castle gate. An English household 4 years from home.
In the spring of 1587 at Třeboň, gazing into the stone, he finds it. (The child spirit) comes back to the glass at Třeboň.
Two families, one castle, and a silence where the angels used to be. The 48:2748 minutos y 27 segundospartnership is dead. What is left in the water town of Třeboň through 1588 is the wreckage. Two households orbiting each other, a friendship curdled into accounts and grievances, and a stone on its table with nobody kneeling in front of it.
... children born in castles they will never see again,...
from six years of conversation with spirits in Habsburg lands.
Half a century goes by ... the command at Třeboň that handed the scrier everything he wanted, ...
... through the covenant at Třeboň that nobody asked her to approve.
In Cotton's keeping, the angel diaries of the later years, Poland, Prague, Třeboň, sit out the decades in quiet.
the anguish at Třeboň in John Dee's own hand,
... the command at Třeboň that handed the scrier everything he wanted,

clad in rosy skirt and blouse appears...

where's her tray, aye, say then

Basket filled with lemons

hangs no longer heavy on her arm;

Curtsying deeply so they beset her,

fanning her cleavage, even better,

eating waffles and drinking nectar

ELEVEN MOONS ECLIPSED - Plot Reveal - a Tourney

In StrixAlluka's Eleven Moons duology, her Aritsar AU, you may recall that Book I, Eleven Moons Aligned, ended with Oba Mace's funeral and the reveal of Moon Mask as Montparnasse, who reveals himself to be another raybearer, accompanied by Musichetta, Hay Lin, a little Gavroche, and a Mewish lordling by name of Devin Trunswick.

Ever since that cliffhanger, we wondered how Eleven Moons Eclipsed would transcur and if there would be a civil war - rest assured, the late Oba's/High King's council decided that there would be a tourney between the members of the Sun Prince's (Enjolras') and the Moon Prince's ('Parnasse's) councils. And yes, Musichetta and Gavroche will partake in the council on 'Parnasse's side...

**********************

Here are the members of each council:

On Enjolras' side:

Oloye/Crown Prince Enjolras; son of the oba and High Lady Ambassador Cvetka, heir to the throne, raybearer

High Lord Archdean Combeferre - Djbanti, death by poisoning / hallow of eidetic/photographic memory

High Lord General Courfeyrac - Nontes, death by battery / hallow of optimism inducement and happiness inducement

High Lord Laureate Grantaire - Sparti (cabin boy), death by bleeding / hallow of slowing down and taking away entropy (which works like the Stand Crazy Diamond)

High Priestess Cosette Valjean - Biraslov (half-Nontish half-Biraslov isoken), death by gluttony / hallow of glowing in the dark, a different colour based upon her mood

High Lady of Castles Éponine Thénardier - Swana (one-quarter-Nontish one-quarter-Blessid half-Swanian isoken), death by burning / hallow of lie detection

High Lord Judge Marius Pontmercy-Ghàilenor - Mewe (half-Nontish half-Mewish isoken), death by drowning / hallow of giving/taking away hallows

High Lord Ambassador Feuilly - Quetzala (realmless -ie stateless- orphan isoken dreamcatcher maker, origins unknown), death by suffocation / hallow of speaking and understanding every human language

High Lord Magus Jo-Lee Lin - Moreyao (born in Songland, Redemptor adopted by the Lins), death by contagion, hallow of healing illnesses and injuries and transferring them to himself

High Lord Treasurer Lesgle "Bossuet" - Nyamba, death by organ failure / hallow of giving good luck at the cost of suffering bad luck himself (he does so by shaking hands or having a kiss blown his way, alluding to the lyrics of "Chim Chim Cheree")

High Lord of Husbandry Bahorel - Dhyrma, death by mauling / hallow of unstoppable righteous anger-trance (think Cú Chulainn or the Incredible Hulk)

High Lady of Harvests Jehanne Prouvaire - Blessid Valley (half-Nontish half-Blessid isoken; trans girl), death by hexes, hallow of making plants grow by petting them and singing to them (her power is even seen to affect fungi, but half as much as plants).

*********************

On 'Parnasse's side (all of these take the same drug that Aidana takes, kuso-kuso, and they have been trained in secret in a chamber underneath Enoba Palace):

Moon Prince/Oloye Montparnasse - son of the late oba and of High Lady Archdean Klytemnestra, spare to the throne, raybearer

High Lord Laureate Devin of Trunswick (Mountain Cat Mask) - Mewe - Hallow of controlling fire (excellent breeding) - death by burning

High Lady Judge Tahlia (Frog Mask) - Biraslov - Hallow of superhuman intelligence / calculating (exceptional intelligence) - death by contagion

UPDATE ON TV TROPES (Female autism depiction)!

Today I visited the TV Tropes page on Hollywood Autism (stereotypes / fictional depictions) and I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED on its mention of the recent trend of female and hyperactive autistic characters who are just like Yours Truly - Luna Lovegood, Entrapta, Zoey from KPDH et al. It also highlights that this depiction / stereotype is pushed by algorithms on social media (although, IMHO, it was Rowling's creation of Luna that broke the mold of Always Male autism depictions and created the new paradigm):

There are some concerns that the 'new' depiction of autism as mostly white, young women with a hyperactive, unstable personality and marketable interests (such as fashion, cosmetics, and media consumption), pushed by algorithms on social media platforms, is just as destructive as other existing stereotypes, given that it continues the pattern of erasing the lives and experiences of a wide range of people in favour of focusing on a tiny facet of a much larger phenomenon.

And for some individuals, many of these symptoms and qualities are truth in television.

TSQ-IV: THE ATLAS OF CLASSIC TALES

CLAUDIA BORDIN

In the kingdom where we are now, there is a very clever princess. One day, when she was terribly bored, she made up her mind to marry, but she wanted a husband who could give a good answer to any question and wasn't boring. On the third day of receiving prospective husbands, a boy made his way boldly up to the palace. His eyes sparkled and he had handsome long hair, but his clothes were those of a peasant.
Can ... get ... inside the palace?
... works at the palace and knows of a back door that leads to the royal chamber.
When the lights went out in the palace, ... led ... to the back door which had been left ajar. They climbed the broad staircase, at the top of which they met the housekeeper ... who led them to the princess' chamber. ... over the bed, lifted a corner of the bedsheet and saw dark hair on the pillow. ... (add continuation soon)

(Cut out the palace at the bottom left corner)

THE TRUTH ABOUT LORD VERISOPHT

--this post I had planned to do for AGES but always something came in between--.

In El semen de los ahorcados, it is very clear that the plot is a massive multiplayer crossover to rival the works of Kim Newman, whose concept of the Xeniades Club (a secret society of supervillains, who in El semen are all more or less queer) the fic author, StrixAlluka (now StrixLuluka), borrowed. Next to Count Jean de Satigny, his rival/kismesis/frenemy Lord Henry Wotton is one of the most relevant characters in the Seedverse. The reason he wants Enjolras as his "servant" so badly? He lost his own catamite/protégé, Lord (Frederick) Verisopht (borrowed from Dickens, just like Mme. Defarge).

After a tennis match, sipping some Bellinis prepared by Montparnasse (Bellinis that fortunately aren't poisoned), Enjolras arrives and Lord Henry confides in his French kismesis that the blond stripling is a diamond in the rough - exactly what he needs to replace his late lover, Lord Verisopht, a young and slender lordling in his twenties who was found dead and covered in cherry blossoms in a public park, with a serene smile on his face. The coroner's report revealed no trace of weapons or poisons... at this point Enjolras whispers "Avada Kedavra," and both Muggle nobles are intrigued... Enj says that this was merely an intrusive thought.

In an omake, it was revealed how Lord Verisopht died. He was a homeschooled Squib whom Lord Henry took under his wing when his granny / guardian died, but he still had knowledge of the wizarding world (think Neville Longbottom but Squib and more unfortunate). The older noble introduced him to high society and together they led a life of self-indulgence in ballrooms and casinos. His debut was in a Shakespeare-themed masked ball where Lord Henry was dressed as Oberon and young Verisopht as Titania, in green fairy costumes with glow-in-the-dark details and flapping wings. Here they met Count Jean de Satigny, dressed as Mercutio, who made a critique of their costumes. The lordling was very naive and believed everything his mentor said.

Ultimately some Knights of Walpurgis (actually hitmen employed by a mysterious employer) "set a trap for Lord Henry and Count Jean de Satigny in order to obtain an ancient relic." (This was all a lie). It was Lord Henry who set a trap for the lordling, and killed him because he had grown tired of his "boy toy" - which reveals that he had some knowledge of the wizarding world. Henry gave the order to the masked hitman to Avada Kedavra Lord Verisopht, whose last expression was to look at his mentor and collapse backwards swaddled in that green light, barely unable to make out his mentor's face in the dark but suddenly understanding who had given the order. His peaceful smile when his lifeless form was discovered among butterflies and dragonflies, covered in cherry blossom, seems to say "so be it..."

YEAR OF GREAT MEDLARS: THE LOCKET

In El semen de los ahorcados, to be more precise its play-within-the-fic The Year of Great Medlars, the young and queer tragic hero, Dauphin Francis (played by Courfeyrac), wears a golden, heart-shaped locket for half of the play. The real locket is at the British Museum, and he wears a really realistic replica:

The locket, of solid gold inlaid with pearl and rubies (the original; what we see on stage is only a replica), and what happens to it, are central to the play: it highlights both his fear of commitment and the vagaries of fortune.

On both sides, the locket has the word toujours, "forever," in inlaid ruby letters. The obverse (front) side has the Tudor Rose and the Granada (pomegranate) of the Catholic Royals growing on entwining bushes, while the reverse side has the initials H (for Henry VIII) and K (for Katherine of Aragón) tied together with a Gordian knot - the symbols of the Dauphin's future in-laws; he is betrothed to the future Bloody Mary.

The teenage crown prince of France is supposed to wear the locket for at least one month, and then cut a lock of his dark hair and place it inside the locket, which will be shipped to England as confirmation of the betrothal... Francis and Mary were already betrothed as infants in the cradle, but he is afraid of commitment and he has discovered that he prefers men to women (sexually). So he refuses to place the lock of his hair inside, but wears the locket at court, to keep up appearances. Then, suddenly, the betrothal is annulled (due to Mary's parents' divorce and her being declared a bastard, unfit to marry a crown prince), and the empty locket is shipped back to England... The conversation that comes after is what it all hinges upon:

FRANCIS (Courfeyrac): I can't believe I've got such good luck! That bloody Mary is now declared a bastard, unfit to tie the knot with me! Toujours my arse (pardon my French)!

SEBASTIAN (Combeferre): Really? How come, Your Grace?

FRANCIS: Her Papa just divorced and remarried that court lady, what's her name, Anne Boleyn; and her mother now lives as a nun in a convent. So Mary is a bastard now, they're expecting a male heir instead...

SEBASTIAN: You're not wearing the locket...

FRANCIS: As soon as I heard the news, I had it shipped back to England. Empty, without a lock of my hair inside. You see, she was totally unfit... No matter how many languages she speaks, or how well she plays the harpsichord, or if she has been educated by Lluís Vives himself; I don't care at all! That portrait of her I saw was pretty scary, with that flaming red hair and those piercing eyes... but now I've thought of something that you must listen to.

SEBASTIAN: I'm all ears. What have you thought of, Your Grace?

FRANCIS: Until right now, I was completely carefree. I had endless freedom and no one, no king or courtiers, to hold me back. But being completely carefree just meant that there was no one to care FOR, and no one who cares FOR YOU. All I've found myself wanting to do... was to be by your side, to tell you about all of it... Every detail, every curiosity... I want to share all of it with my favourite person. So I found myself coming back to you more and more often. I am no longer afraid of commitment, for I have found someone I can commit to, finally...

SEBASTIAN: And that means?

FRANCIS: It was very unlike me. For the first time in forever, I want to stay in one place. Have someone to come home to, someone who can quench my thirst. Not only for drink, but also that thirst for something I have always been missing.

SEBASTIAN: For love?

FRANCIS: Love? Maybe, even if love between two men is forbidden and star-crossed. We'll disguise it as friendship between a prince and his secretary/squire/cupbearer. The court and the army will only see two good friends... You could use my help more than ever; and I am happy to oblige you!

SEBASTIAN: Why?

FRANCIS: You manage your responsibilities, and I contribute mine. We get along splendidly. We're two halves of a whole, you're the ice to my fire, the part of me that I have always missed... So much talking has put a tickle in my throat, couldn't you pour me a cordial on the rocks?

SEBASTIAN: Now I am the one who is happy to oblige you! (He leaves and then returns with a carafe of cordial on ice and two glasses, which he pours to the dauphin and to himself. Francis drains his glass at one gulp, while Sebastian only sips). You should not drink so quickly, Your Grace; you will catch a cold.

FRANCIS: But my throat was on fire! I'll remember it for the next time. By the way... What do you put in that cordial that makes it taste so good?

SEBASTIAN: Ice from the Alps... and it's infused with cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and elder flowers. And a huge dash of sugar! But what counts the most is the secret ingredient: it's made above all with love. I always think of you and of how much you will enjoy both the coolness and the taste, as I make all my cordials.

FRANCIS: And now I am thirsty for something more... can you embrace this poor sinner and kiss his lips, until his thirst is quenched?

SEBASTIAN: I am once more happy to oblige. (Both hide behind a pillar, embrace, and kiss passionately).

REVOLTING CHILDREN - ENJOLTAIRE FICS

More El semen de los ahorcados filks! This one is from Book I, when the cast are "fourthies" and Javert becomes temporarily headmaster and induces apartheid between the Houses - this is when they start AS-SORTED and get the ball rolling, revolutionarywise!

REVOLTING CHILDREN

JEHAN PROUVAIRE:

Woah!
Never again will he get the best of me!
Never again will they take away my freedom
and we won't forget the day we fought
for the right to be a little bit naughty!

Never again
will that bloody door slam!
Never again
will I be bullied, and
Never again

will I doubt it
when my mummy says I'm a miracle!

NEVER AGAIN!!

[ALL MEMBERS OF AS-SORTED]
Never again will we live behind bars!
Never again now that we know
We are!

We are revolting children
living in rеvolting times

and we sing revolting songs
using rеvolting rhymes
We'll be revolting children
till our revolting's done
And we'll have Javert soon bolting
we're revolting!

[BAHOREL]
We will become a screaming horde!

[ÉPONINE]
Take out your Quidditch bat, and use it as a sword!

[COURFEYRAC]
Never again will we be ignored!

[GRANTAIRE]
We'll find out where the chalk is stored
and draw rude pictures on the board!

[ENJOLRAS]
It's not insulting!

[ALL MEMBERS OF AS-SORTED]
We're revolting!

We can S-P-L how we like!
If enough of us are wrong
Wrong is right!

Everyone! A little N-O-R-TY! Y?

Cause we're a little bit naughty!
You say we oughta stay inside the line
If we disobey at the same time
There is nothing that Javert then can do!

[GRANTAIRE]

He can take that truncheon and S-H-UV...!

SEREMOS REVOLTOSOS

JEHAN PROUVAIRE:

Woh oh woh oh woh...

everyone a little N-O-R-TY, Y?

no volvemos atrás 'cause we are

ONE HOGWARTS STUDENT'S DREAM (SEEDVERSE FILKS)

I can't stop harping on on how Vento Aureo has much in common with Les Mis (in canon), Passione with the Friends of the ABC, and Giorno Giovanna, a blond, good-looking, and idealistic leader who wants to change the world and make justice, with Enjolras. And in my fan-made AUs, the references just reiterate the parallels. Especially in El semen de los ahorcados.

"I, Paragon Enjolras, have a dream" (and the core members of AS-SORTED doing the Torture Dance) to La Squadra Esecuzioni being anti-villains in the UK Starforce Auror gaiden (and in As the Luck Would Have It, the Toll AU).

During the pandemic, I came across One Cartoonist's Dream, a YouTube channel that makes filk song videos about JJBA, with hero song and villain song fics for every Part up to Steel Ball Run. As I listened recently to the Vento Aureo songs (versions of Go the Distance for the heroes and Kill the Beast for the villains), it clicked that these should be filks for the grand finale of El semen de los ahorcados, the one where everyone except Marius and Cosette (and a few others) dies.

ONE HOGWARTS STUDENT'S DREAM (SEEDVERSE FILKS)

SEE THE SUNRISE (HERO SIDE)

(Stanza 1)

GRANTAIRE:

I was as if dead,

I had quite the fright,

then once more, in my life,

I have seen the light...

ENJOLRAS:

I have got a dream,

that like gold shines on and on,

and I solemnly swear

a new day will dawn!

(Refrain 1)

ENJOLRAS

And it will come true,

I can see the sunrise,

COMBEFERRE:

Everything you did

earns my sure respect...

COURFEYRAC:

Looking at the road,

long and winding road ahead,

EVERYONE:

It's the future that we will bring

when tomorrow comes...

(Stanza 2)

COURFEYRAC:

Gather up your guts,

clear yourself a way,

through the deepest darkness

and the darkest wastes...

ENJOLRAS:

My resolve and dreams

show us all our way,

paths illuminated...

the sun won't lead us astray!

(Refrain 2)

GRANTAIRE:

And it's all all right,

I can see the sunrise,

GAVROCHE:

I am going too,

I won't abandon you!

JEHANNE PROUVAIRE:

I have followed through

and my will is true

EVERYONE:

This must be the reason

for which we all were born!

(Bridge)

GRANTAIRE:

Now I choose the path of suffering, the martyrdom ahead

right now, a sleeping zombie rears his head...

(Spoken): I did what I thought was right.

I have no regrets at all.

In spite of the ways of the world,

I want to walk the path I believe in...

ENJOLRAS:

(Spoken): With the legacy inherited from our ancestors,

we must keep moving forwards!

This sword... will make a new dawn rise!

(Refrain 3)

ENJOLRAS

(Sung) My inheritance...

We can see the sunrise

Now we must embrace

bringing truths to the light...

EVERYONE:

Blowing in our souls,

transcending our roles,

there's a shining sunrise

that will rise when tomorrow comes!

(Coda)

ÉPONINE:

Blowing in my soul,

in that empty hole...

there's a shining sunrise

that will rise when tomorrow comes!

OVERLORD (VILLAIN SIDE)

(Prelude - before the storming of Hogwarts)

MONTPARNASSE:

(Spoken) Your Lordship, you should have your way, as usual. You deserve it...

DE SATIGNY:

(Spoken) I can feel a connection to that stripling... he's coming nearer and nearer!

Soon he will be at my feet, and bend the knee before me!

I can almost hear his footsteps!

MONTPARNASSE:

No way!

DE SATIGNY:

(Spoken) We can't rest until that lad is safely in my grasp!

We'll wipe them all out and capture Enjolras alive!

XENIADES CLUB (everyone)

YES, SER!

(Act I)

PRINCE ORLOVSKY:

We'll exterminate them all!

LORD HENRY:

Don't fire till they close in on!

GUNNAR MALSTRÖM:

Give me all of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade

to experiment upon!

COUNTESS CAGLIOSTRO:

Everyone already falters,

who'll come out victorious?

MONTPARNASSE:

We!

DE SATIGNY:´

I am standing on the summit,

follow Jean de Satigny!

(Act II)

DE SATIGNY:

Through the streets in the dark,

a mysterious cloaked figure

moving forth while they're concealing their true self...

MONTPARNASSE:

By the leader's right side,

I'll go where AS-SORTED gather,

and I stay calm and serene like a light elf...

I can feel his life ebb for the poison,

and his eyes only see what ain't right...

Hear the phones in the night,

see their screens burning bright

with blue light...

(Interlude I. The Xeniades Club have captured Grantaire)

MONTPARNASSE:

(Spoken): Don't you dare play with me!

GRANTAIRE:

Are you there? Is that you?

DE SATIGNY:

Grantaire is already as dead as a dodo.

Let me show you the way like this!

GRANTAIRE:

You got here safely...

DE SATIGNY:

Surely Lady Alistair is sensing me!

LADY ALISTAIR:

I don't know where my husband is.

DE SATIGNY:

What is the goal of AS-SORTED?

'Parnasse, please guard this hostage!

MONTPARNASSE:

YES, SER!

(Act II)

MONTPARNASSE:

Overcome the ordeal,

MONTPARNASSE + DE SATIGNY (unison):

Was victorious in my salad days,

the golden stripling is of this the source...

DE SATIGNY:

Climbing up spiral stairs

without feeling any vertigo,

to send you all to Tartarus, of course!

(He drains the potion phial.)

I can feel power rise in my system,

it increases and burns in my veins,

overcoming the past,

for a dream that will last,

on a quest for Enjolras...

AS-SORTED (EVERYONE):

(Spoken) What kind of person are you?

And what are you changing into?

DE SATIGNY:

Changing into someone

who is stronger, better-looking,

everyone cannot help be afraid of me...

This is your requiem,

I feel the potion's power,

brace yourselves for Ragnarök...

This is the end!

(Interlude II.)

DE SATIGNY (in his biblically-accurate camp gay fallen angel form);

(Spoken) Ten times on the inside what I am on the outside...

Ten times on the outside what I am on the inside...

LORD HENRY:

There are a few droplets left! (Picks up the phial and drinks the few droplets that remained).

LADY ALISTAIR:

Sweetie? Is that you? Do you recognise me?

There's no escape, AS-SORTED are coming!

(LORD HENRY transforms also into a camp gay fallen angel, but with cyan plumage instead of magenta)

DE SATIGNY:

You have made these fallen angels quite irate!

LORD HENRY:

Full of sound and fury!

GRANTAIRE:

The best thing for me is to retreat... There's no place for me here!

And the Moon will soon be full!

COURFEYRAC, ENJOLRAS (wands and swords ready):

Will you honour me with this dance??

(The two no-longer Muggle fallen angels draw steel as well)

DE SATIGNY:

If we flee the scene, we'll lose our pride!

(Finale)

DE SATIGNY:

Can't retreat! Must advance!

Qualifying for controlling,

to be the chosen one who quaffed this draught...

I'm the camp overlord,

who at heart not changed the slightest,

I, Count Jean de Satigny,

the overlord!

MOOKS:

OVERLORD!

OVERLORD!

OVERLORD!

ENJOLRAS + COURFEYRAC (unison):

AVADA KEDAVRA!!!

(Enj kills de Satigny and Courf kills Lord Henry. All the Xeniades mooks retreat, while the two revolutionaries stand in shock. As the fallen angels die, both aristocrats regain their human forms)

*************+

I Give You The Morning.

Like an eager Christmas child...

Ehe jedes Kind ins Bettchen muss,

dvs.

Innan alla små barn måste gå i säng,

Innan alla små barn måste gå i säng (som också passar samma versmått - INN-an ALL-a små BARN MÅS-te GÅ i SÄNG).

JOJO'S REFERENCES IN THE SEED OF THE HANGED

Due to the author's love for anime, progressive rock, Italian food, and fashion, a legion of JoJo's references often crop up in StrixAlluka's Enjoltaireverse. Especially in her epic saga El semen de los ahorcados / The Seed of the Hanged:

from the characters' poses -- to the psychedelic colours in key scenes (for instance teal, orange, and chartreuse together - a frequent colour scheme!), to Grantaire, Jo-Lee, and Bossuet being modelled physically and personality-wise on Josuke, Koichi, and Okuyasu respectively (and Musichetta on Koichi's girlfriend Yukako, the one with Love Deluxe) -- to Jo-Lee having a certain star birthmark on his shoulder (Word of Alluka confirmed that he IS a Joestar!) -- to "Kono Parnasse da!" and "I, Paragon Enjolras, have a dream" (and the core members of AS-SORTED doing the Torture Dance) to La Squadra Esecuzioni being anti-villains in the UK Starforce Auror gaiden (and in As the Luck Would Have It, the Toll AU). To a combined Stone Ocean and Dolly Parton reference where Musichetta tells Jo-Lee about Bossuet: Jo-Lee, Jo-Lee, Jo-Lee, Jo-Lee, I'm begging of you please don't take my man...

But what stands out is surely a JJBA reference combined with a Date Everything reference: already R and friends had unboxed in the Gryffindor commonroom, in an omake, a Rebel-based (Rebel as an object) rubber duck-chicken hybrid, using a wizarding camera (that's the "honorificabilitudinitatibus" omake where the Gryffindors play chubby bunny using such ten-dollar --ten-dollar is an understatement-- words as "antidisestablishmentarianism," "hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian," and the name of a certain railway station on Anglesey in Wales, and a certain hill on the North Island of New Zealand - hilarious! Grantaire wins the competition but knocking on death's door; he almost gets an impromptu tracheotomy because the "whaka" part of the hill's name is pronounced "fucka" and he has a baker's dozen marshmallows in his mouth and throat! The entire gaiden is HILARIOUS!).

The reference to JJBA is in Éponine's fanfic QUIDDISTAR, a TENNISTAR / Starlight Overheaders AU with Courfparnasse (who want to become QuiddiStars in the AU) as her crack OTP, set on a Quidditch training camp (Courf and Parnasse are obviously not amused!). The titles of the fic's acts, or Matches, are Quidditch puns on the Parts of JoJo's, a reference to the seasons of Starlight Overheaders being puns on those same Parts! In order, the punny titles are:

Match I: Phantom Quidditch

Match II: Quaffle Tendency

Match III: Quidditch Cup Crusaders

Match IV: Leather is Untearable

Match V: Boccino Aureo / Golden Snitch

Match VI: Stone Bludger

Match VII: Steel Bat Run

Match VIII: ParnasseLion (4 Balls!)

Match IX: The COURFEYLands

:::::::::::::::::::::::

In Starlight Overheaders, the punny titles are:

  • Volley Tendency is a play on Part 2's subtitle, Battle Tendency.
  • Grand Slam Crusaders is a play on Part 3's subtitle, Stardust Crusaders.
  • Nylon is Unbreakable is a play on Part 4's subtitle, Diamond is Unbreakable.
  • Golden Spin / Giro Aureo is a play on Part 5's subtitle, Golden Wind / Vento Aureo.
    • While not a direct reference, a battle technique known as "Spin" features prominently in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, mainly in Part 7: Steel Ball Run.
