I SING FOR THE DISAPPOINTED

THE DISAPPOINTED.

THERE are songs enough for the hero
Who dwells on the heights of fame;
I sing for the disappointed—
For those who missed their aim.
I sing with a tearful cadence
For one who stands in the dark,
And knows that his last, best arrow
Has bounded back from the mark.
I sing for the breathless runner,
The eager, anxious soul,
Who falls with his strength exhausted,
Almost in sight of the goal;
For the hearts that break in silence,
With a sorrow all unknown,
For those who need companions,
Yet walk their ways alone.{144}
There are songs enough for the lovers
Who share love’s tender pain,
I sing for the one whose passion
Is given all in vain.
For those whose spirit comrades
Have missed them on the way,
I sing, with a heart o’erflowing,
This minor strain to-day.
And I know the Solar System
Must somewhere keep in space
A prize for that spent runner
Who barely lost the race.
For the plan would be imperfect
Unless it held some sphere
That paid for the toil and talent
And love that are wasted here.
-------------------------------
"THE BLUE DANUBE" WALTZ
Would the lists of the slain who slumber
On the Danube's battle-plains
The unknown hosts outnumber
Who die 'neath the "Danube's" strains?
Those fall where cannons rattle,
'Mid the rain of shot and shell;
But these, in a fiercer battle,
Find death in the music's swell.
With the river's roar of passion
Is blended the dying groan;
But here, in the halls of fashion,
Hearts break, and make no moan.
And the music, swelling and sweeping,
Like the river, knows it all;
But none are counting or keeping
The lists of these who fall.

IF NATIONS HAD GODS OF THEIR OWN...

Said the Kaiser’s god to the god of the Czar:
   ‘Hark, hark, how my people pray.
Their faith, methinks, is greater by far
Than all the faiths of the others are;
   They know I will help them slay.’

Said the god of the Czar: ‘My people call
   In a medley of tongues; they know
I will lend my strength to them one and all.
Wherever they fight their foes shall fall
   Like grass where the mowers go.’

Then the god of the Gauls spoke out of a cloud
   To the god of the King nearby:
‘Our people pray, tho’ they pray not loud;
They ask for courage to slaughter a crowd,
   And to laugh, tho’ themselves may die.’

AND THE CONSEQUENCE OF ALL THESE NATIONAL GODS WAS...

Little lads and grandsires,
Women old with care;
But all the men are dying men
Or dead men over there.

No one stops to dig graves;
Who has time to spare?
The dead men, the dead men
How the dead men stare.

Kings are out a-hunting—
Oh, the sport is rare;
With dying men and dead men
Falling everywhere.

Life for lads and grandsires;
Spoils for kings to share;
And dead men, dead men,
Dead men everywhere.

IMPATIENCE.

How can I wait until you come to me?
The once fleet mornings linger by the way,
Their sunny smiles touched with malicious glee
At my unrest; they seem to pause, and play
Like truant children, while I sigh and say,
How can I wait?
How can I wait? Of old, the rapid hours
Refused to pause or loiter with me long;
But now they idly fill their hands with flowers,
And make no haste, but slowly stroll among
The summer blooms, not heeding my one song,
How can I wait?
How can I wait? The nights alone are kind;
They reach forth to a future day, and bring
Sweet dreams of you to people all my mind;
And time speeds by on light and airy wing.
I feast upon your face, I no more sing,
How can I wait?
How can I wait? The morning breaks the spell
A pitying night has flung upon my soul.
You are not near me, and I know full well
My heart has need of patience and control;
Before we meet, hours, days, and weeks must roll.
How can I wait?
How can I wait? Oh, love, how can I wait
Until the sunlight of your eyes shall shine
Upon my world that seems so desolate?
Until your hand-clasp warms my blood like wine;
Until you come again, oh, love of mine,
How can I wait?

When Mother Reads Aloud
by
Author Unknown

When Mother reads aloud, the past
   Seems real as every day;
I hear the tramp of armies vast,
I see the spears and lances cast,
   I join the thrilling fray;
Brave knights and ladies fair and proud
I meet when Mother reads aloud.

When Mother reads aloud, far lands
   Seem very near and true;
I cross the desert’s gleaming sands,
Or hunt the jungle’s prowling bands,
   Or sail the ocean blue.
Far heights, whose peaks the cold mists shroud,
I scale, when Mother reads aloud.

Lisant un conte,
Jacques-Joseph Tissot ❤

When Mother reads aloud, I long
   For noble deeds to do—
To help the right, redress the wrong;
It seems so easy to be strong,
   So simple to be true.
Oh, thick and fast the visions crowd
My eyes, when Mother reads aloud.

LOVE'S COMING.
She had looked for his coming as warriors come,
With the clash of arms and the bugle's call:
But he came instead with a stealthy tread,
Which she did not hear at all.
She had thought how his armor would blaze in the sun,
As he rode like a prince to claim his bride:
In the sweet dim light of the falling night
She found him at her side.
She had dreamed how the gaze of his strange, bold eye
Would wake her heart to a sudden glow:
She found in his face the familiar grace
Of a friend she used to know.
She had dreamed how his coming would stir her soul,
As the ocean is stirred by the wild storm's strife:
He brought her the balm of a heavenly calm,
And a peace which crowned her life.

IN MEMORIAM GUSTAVI ADOLPHI - MMXX

 Die Schlacht von sterblichen Helden

(The Battle of Mortal Heroes)

Landkreis Weißenfels, Kurfürstentum Sachsen
Früh-November 1632
(Weissenfels Rural District, Electorate of Saxony
Early November 1632)

(The eve of battle, at Schloss Weissenfels. The last farewell.)
QUEEN MARY ELEANOR:
The black-eyed deathbringer who reaches for the stars...
You can't fight against him!
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
For which reason? Eleanor...
MARY ELEANOR:
For nights I have dreamt of this engagement. You have got no chance of returning alive!
To die like a hero and be remembered... Is that what you're fighting for?
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Pardon me, Eleanor, but my duty is to go.
Those who deserve death are awaiting me.
MARY ELEANOR:
Please don't go away! Please! You may know that your enemy...
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
My dear!
MARY ELEANOR (desperate): Gustav... Gustavus!!!

(The battle proper begins the next day on the plains of Lützen)

WALLENSTEIN:
Follow Albrecht von Wallenstein, Duke of Friedland!!!

Legendens krönika fortlöper lika snabbt som blinkningar med ögonen.
(The chronicles of legend are as rapid as the blinking of an eye)

SWEDES: If this fog keeps on for the whole day, we'll be in trouble!
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Even if these cowards form in tercios like at Breitenfeld, don't be overconfident!
STÅLHANDSKE:
If we're lucky, they will use tercios once more.
Now that Tilly is dead, the Kaiser's folk don't stand a chance!
AIDE-DE-CAMP:
Your Grace! The leader of the Imperial host seems to be stark raving mad!

WALLENSTEIN:
Pappenheim! Hope you get here as soon as possible... Terzky! Piccolomini! You will start attacking until Count Pappenheim arrives. Today Sweden will fall!

GOTT MIT UNS!
(GOD WITH US!)

Scarlet waves are clashing against lilywhite shores,
for dying, for dying, for slaying today...
Now they have ceased to breathe and won't speak anymore,
yet they will soon be noticed by history as well.
Their most humble hopes (their hopes), faint glimmers of light (for the future),
won't be spared by chance (destiny)...
There is no mercy at all!

They have changed completely throughout the fray,
and those who will this eve kiss their lips
won't be loved ones with hearts full of cheer,
but ravens thirsty for blood!

Schwert des Urteils, Wallenstein, er hat keine Angst vorm sterben!
Der einsame Wallenstein führt die Schweden ins Verderben!
(Sword of Judgement, Wallenstein, he is not afraid of dying!
Lonely Wallenstein leads the Swedes towards their downfall!)

GOTTFRIED ZU PAPPENHEIM (on his way from Halle to Lützen, galloping forth at the head of his cavalry):
It's been a long time since I last saw Halle!
I bet the townsfolk had forgotten me!
But you may know who stormed Magdeburg to dread my name throughout Saxony!
Here I come!
Jesus and Mary!

(Wallenstein has the village of Lützen burned to the ground, as the fog returns. Both armies are fighting even fiercer than before)

HOFKIRCHEN:
Your Majesty!
They're burning Lützen to the ground!
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS: What?
HOFKIRCHEN:
The Duke of Friedland's forces...
on his own command and decree!
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Curses! Let's hope for the tide of battle to turn...
HOFKIRCHEN:
Well, Wallenstein's right hand, the bold Count of Pappenheim, is riding hither at full speed!
We should strike ere the Pappenheimers arrive! This is our chance!

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Nils Brahe shall lead the center, storm the trenches!
(Yes, sir!)
Hofkirchen shall lead the left wing north of Lützen!
(Yes, sir!)
I myself will lead the right wing, like I have always done!
SWEDISH LEADERS:
We are all of the Midnight Sun!
To those who will survive now say "Auf Wiedersehen!"
You may think that Lady Fortune is cruel,
yet, even if she is, never fear her at all!
You may know that she does not always smile
to those who have never fought for life,
to those who have never fought for life!

WALLENSTEIN:
Thus we Austrians won't
be subjects ever more,
bereft of power, to our liege lord!
We'll fight the King of Sweden, and the Kaiser, and the Lord,
and even Lady Fortune, to claim back our fates!

Slutligen har två vidunders vägar korsats...
(At last, the paths of two legendary beasts have crossed...)

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Wallenstein... you are the scoundrel who defeated me at the Old Holdfast!
I am the King of Sweden, Gustavus Adolphus. And I am still your enemy!

WALLENSTEIN:
You thought you would win?

These times are glorious eras of struggle, melody that lasts forever...
As religions change, lives vanish like shooting stars, disappear as faint twinkles of light.
It's an era of legends, lore, and conviction, through which ran great mortal heroes...
Those who have been defeated, slain, crippled, wounded, have all been abandoned by destiny...

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Wallenstein!
Have you forgotten the pact we made last winter?
Why are you supporting the Kaiser's struggle?

Wallenstein!

WALLENSTEIN:
The Crown did nothing for me! If I were its ruler, the Realm would be in far better hands!
GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS:
Don't make me laugh!
Gott mit uns!

(Gustavus rides into the fog to his regiment's aid and gets lost among the Croats, he is shot in the left arm, then in the upper back.)

GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS (falling off his steed):
Eleanor!
CROATS (rifling him and riddling his chest with bullets):
Take that!
(The Croatian officer gives Gustavus the mercy shot in the nape of the neck).

(After the battle, in the church of Weissenfels)

MARY ELEANOR:
Ah ah ah ah ah Ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah Ah ah aaaah ah...
Gustavus...
I couldn't...
SPIRIT OF GUSTAVUS:
Eleanor... my love!
MARY ELEANOR (desperate):
I will never let you leave me alone!!!
Wait for me!
Gustavus!!!

Vorhang zu...
(Down with the curtain...)

To the memory of Gustavus Adolphus Karlsson of Vasa

*Nyköping, Sweden, 9th of December 1594
 + Lützen, Saxony, 6th of November 1632

His spouse Mary Eleanor (next to the throne), their daughter Christina Augusta
(in his arms), his right-hand man Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna (next to the throne),
 his courtiers and his people, his officers and soldiers, will always
 keep his memory alive, as long as Sweden and freedom exist.

Beloved ruler of nations and leader of armies,
consort, father, friend, and lover

Inspired by thirst
for glory, on the field of battle quaffed
instead death's bitter draught.

The last word was missing in his epic song:
the word that crowns every achievement.
The mourners have done their duty, right or wrong:
they wrote it in blood and bereavement.

He left us when we (and he) expected it the least
in the prime of his life and at the climax of his career,
before he could be tarnished by the failing vigour of an older age
or by the corruption brought upon him by success.
A single bullet, just like any other,
suddenly struck his back and entered his noble chest,
to quench a flame that never could or should have burned brighter.

HERO KING

(Mithrandir)

Coda of the Lützen musical - threnody

Let the night never cease to call you Let the day nevermore be the same Though you've gone where we cannot find you in each heart you have set your name

Hero King, far you wander and long may your name be sung Through kingdoms of starlight and realms of the sun

Hero King, though you're hidden we're still guided by your light You're walking beside us a friend in the night

We were lost when the dark descended and the light gathered into a storm You appeared like a sunlit morning at the winds of a world at war

Hero King, far you wander and long may your name be sung Through kingdoms of starlight and realms of the sun

Hero King, though you're hidden we're still guided by your light You're walking beside us a friend in the night

Hero King rising through the shadows like a star shining deep in its home You will dwell in our hearts forever Nevermore will we stand alone!!

COUNTDOWN TO LÜTZEN 5: WITHOUT YOU

 WITHOUT YOU

(Ohne dich)

sung by Queen Mary Eleanor on the 5th of November like today

I walk through woodland evergreen,

the last place where we each other have seen...

Though the evening mist veils all the land,

o'er the woods, the roads, the heath, the strand...

And the forest is dark to the core...

Oh, I'm so sore...

and no songbirds sing evermore...

Without you I can't exist...

without you...

With you I cannot resist,

without you...

Without you the hours I reckon,

without you...

With you I count every second

to when I'll be without you...

On the boughs above each trench of strife,

everything is still and bereft of life...

And my breathing rattles to the core...

Oh, I'm so sore...

and no songbirds sing evermore...

Without you I can't exist...

without you...

With you I cannot resist,

without you...

Without you the hours I reckon,

without you...

With you I count every second

to when I'll be without you...

(Zwischenspiel in sobs)

And my breathing rattles to the core...

Oh, I'm so sore...

and no songbirds sing evermore...

Without you I can't exist...

without you...

With you I cannot resist,

without you...

Without you the hours I reckon,

without you...

With you I count every second

to when I'll be without you...

COUNTDOWN TO LÜTZEN 4: THE STRINGS OF POWER

THE STRINGS OF POWER

(Die Fäden in der Hand)

sung by Albrecht von Wallenstein

Here in Friedland life is lively, bright, and grand;

see the wealth of the realm,

how it blesses all this land...

Our golden future puts all Friedland up in light;

preserving the status quo

is our duty and our right...

So please think of this as the occasion

for a little more subordination...

Look at these gentlemen,

how devoted they're to me!

Yes they're always at my service,

I decide, they think they're free...

Even though lots of rage

and resentment overflow,

I hold the strings of power in my hand!!

Great unrest still haunts our hinterlands for sure,

they are restless, defiant...

ah, but oh so immature!

With quick action of these threats we'll soon be free,

all remains as it is

and so will it ever be...

We can't see the future that lies ahead,

therefore we must follow His Lordship's plans instead!

Should they boldly protest

and demand that they be free,

I just snap my fingers once, and

all their hearts belong to me!

Should they wildly protest,

all that fussing makes me cold!

I hold the strings of power in my hand!!

If I lift a fingertip, a favour is bestowed;

just a flick of the wrist, and another favour's owed...

Lean but slightly left to make the Liberals elated;

then flip right, et voilà! Tories feel intoxicated...

Make or break a promise, I don't care!

The one hanging on the line is left with nothing!

Let them shout, let them roar,

let them pounce to right and left,

when I wish them to be silent,

they're as if of life bereft!

Is our course clear at last?

Violence makes everyone bend,

I hold the strings of power in my hand...

'Tis an ancient noble art

to preserve one's influence

with a mind for consequence;

ne'er outdated...

One is never planless having power in their thrall,

nor thoughtlessly let them all

just be strangulated...

Who holds power every hour

in hands thoughtful and discrete

can pull anybody's strings just

as they please, control complete...

Rationality's key

in this art old as the land,

I hold the strings of power in my hand!

(Chorus of courtiers)

Come and sing, come and dance

as this courtly life demands!

If he says we should be laughing,

we are cheerful and we're grand!

Merrily we await,

we will do whate'er he tells...

He holds the strings of power in his hand!!

He is bright, he is strong,

he's always been a righteous man...

With charisma binds the people,

we're under his spell, he can...

What he says is the law,

he's seducer of the world,

he holds the strings of power in his hand!!

He holds the reins of power in his hand!!

He holds dominion in his hand!!

COUNTDOWN TO LÜTZEN 3: THE FORETELLING

Pichi Pichi Pitch songs- these serve as an exposition...

Sung by the common people and the intelligentsia in the 1630s

 (Kodou)

When darkness and violence threaten the land,

there is whispered a foretelling,

that someone will come forth

from the snows of the North

to free all the oppressed...

We believed in hope and hope is at hand,

at the door of every dwelling...

On this sunlit morn the sun of a new dawn

from the midnight lands is blessed...

Hope in our hearts is rising...

he's come forth, he's come forth, he's come forth...

Come hither, light and freedom

from the North, from the North, from the North...

Come save us all...

Come free us all!

King Gustavus Adolphus, at the head of an army

from the North...

A leader so true and bold,

young against the League's commander so old...

Now a game-changing player into the war

is coming forth...

what legends will soon be told

about this young royal who breaks the mold?

The start of a new era,

a hero coming over from the cold!!

(Kizuna)

They burned Magdeburg to the ground,

then they threatened Halle and Leipzig with the same fate...

What else?

When the Catholic League was down,

at Breitenfeld rose a challenger to meet them...

The King!

With Sweden's higher technology,

the field they mastered, their victory

means that oppression is at an end,

that we'll be free!

With lighter cannons and cavalry,

with brand new improvised strategy,

he's won and he'll go down in history!!

From the North comes a beaming

beacon of light;

our hopes now arise to claim

what's ours by right...

Nevermore we'll be oppressed,

feelings rise within our chests,

the Kaiser's and the League's men take to flight...

From the streets of Leipzig to the Northern Sea,

this autumn of 31 is for revelry!

Hear the drinking song they sing,

come and dance with us in ring,

raise a tankard to Sweden and the Hero King!

COUNTDOWN TO LÜTZEN 2: THE WAR STILL GOES ON

 The War Still Goes On (Show Must Go On)

Sung by the common people and the intelligentsia in the 1620s

Dark tradition...

to conform is law;

the Inquisition...

wounds they inflict still raw...

On and on,

does anybody want to take it anymore?

Catholicism

is mandatory now;

forced conformism...

who'll tell our story now?

Hold the line...

does anybody want to take it anymore?

The war still goes on...

Our homes and minds are breaking,

the world we know still quaking

from the war...

that still goes on...

Whatever happens,

we'll leave it all to chance,

though we don't know the steps,

we'll learn to join the dance...

On and on,

does anybody want to take it anymore?

In secret yearning

for our liberty,

a hope that's turning

so close to feeling free...

Outside the dawn is breaking,

but inside in the dark we're aching to be free!!

The war still goes on...

Our homes and minds are breaking,

the world we know still quaking

from the war...

that still goes on...

Our hopes are painted like most fragile butterflies...

Every day could be our last, to suffer and to die...

or to cry for absent friends...

The war still goes on...

Could we face it with a grin?

Are we ever giving in...?

On with the war!

Our hearts to thrill,

our friends to kill,

thus shattering the will to carry on...

ON WITH THE... ON WITH THE... WAR!!

The war still goes on...
