TV Tropes - the Mad Matchmaker (yours truly)

The Mad Matchmaker: This fan (in a fandom) is marked by an obsession with romantic relationships in a work that was never intended to be a romance. They're the kind of person who, instead of criticizing the tacked-on romantic subplot, criticize the alien invasion for getting in the way of the sideplot, and when called on it they refuse to take "It's not a soap opera" for an answer. They will pitch a fit - possibly even flounce from fandom - if their One True Pairing is jossed (this was a major pain in the keister with Jaime and Brienne in canon - I simply left GOT --but not entirely-- when Jaime was killed and Brienne survived and was made Lady Commander; my OTP could not even be Together in Death! Luckily all fics I write are AUs!!!). They may be a fanatical fan of one character or one pairing, or they may just have an uncontrollable desire to Pair the Spares - or just the entire goddamn cast with little logical reason. They take crack pairings seriously and will never shut up about it. Either way, there is no situation where romance is too frivolous, inappropriate, or downright creepy for them. Long story short: A fan of romance to the exclusion of all else in non-romantic works.

This is me when it comes to any romantic subplot: Jaimienne, Enjoltaire, the Prince and Princess in the Snow Queen, the Hendon Hall subplot (Miles and Hugh Hendon and Edith)... any romantic subplot is for me put front and centre. And then there's crack/crossover shipping like Elsabela or Courferre (or any other crack pairings of the non-Enjoltaire Amis)...

When it comes to queer pairings (Yukakira, Enjoltaire, Renloras, KunZoisite, Kurofai, Yukitouya, etc) I am a combination of Mad Matchmaker and Yaoi Fangirl

A female otaku who enjoys anime and manga featuring handsome men engaged in homoerotic relationships. The main difference between a Yaoi Fangirl and Guy-On-Guy Is Hot is that the former are interested in homoromantic/homoerotic fiction and/or fanfiction and/or Shipping, whereas the latter enjoy watching live gay men make out. You can pretty much assume that all yaoi fangirls think Guy-On-Guy Is Hot, but not all women who think Guy-On-Guy Is Hot are yaoi fangirls.

The Japanese term used for a yaoi fangirl is fujoshi, which is a reclaimed term based on a homophonic pun. (There are two characters that are pronounced "fu", with one meaning "respectable woman" and the other meaning "fermented or spoiled"; the usage of fujoshi here translates loosely to "rotten girl", i.e. a woman unfit or "spoiled" for marriage as a result of consuming fictional gay content.) The word is often misused to mean "female otaku," causing female otaku who are not fujoshi (and know the meaning of the word) to correct people everywhere. The male equivalent is called a fudanshi (loosely, "rotten man"), but oddly enough, a lot of fudanshis are straight or bi.

Some Yaoi fans are likely to think that Het Is Ew and many of them tend to be guilty of Die for Our Ship and Ron the Death Eater as a result. They may also indulge in Ukefication. In series where Yaoi Fangirls are seen, at least one joke will be made that involves the Yaoi fangirl's dirty imagination and at least one of the male characters in-universe. This often goes hand in hand with said yaoi fangirl having a (usually rare for females) Nosebleed

THE LGBTQ CHARACTERS OF MY CHILDHOOD

This is a rainbow post, part of the Month of Pride initiative.

I have known LGBTQ lifestyles since I was a child, in spite of being born and raised in a local community in the hinterland of Spain, with an über-Catholic bourgeois family. And you wonder why and how I became aware of the existence of free love?

Ladies and gentlemen, exhibit number one: It's So Amazing!, by Robie H. Harris, translated into Spanish.
AKA "The Book of Sexuality that Made Granny Ana (blessed be her soul) Freak Out."
This was the book that started it all. The one I found in the usual bookshop but my seventy-something and devoutly Catholic nan refused to purchase.
The book that caused me to be aware that love knows no distinction of gender or lifestyle. That love is free.

Exhibit number two: The cupbearers of royal gods.
The author of this blog and of this article is an Aquarius, who, having read all the usual fairytales, began to delve into classical mythology and found out that star signs have their roots in the Hellenistic world. In particular, her own sign depicts Ganymede, the cupbearer on Olympus and the only time Zeus had a different kind of fling. At his underwater palace of Euba, Zeus's brother Poseidon had about the same idea and spirited away another good-looking mortal prince, Pelops, to serve him and his court the nectar.
PS. "Échanson," "cupbearer," is one of my favourite French words.

Exhibit number three: A ladybug who is no lady.
This has always been one of my favourite Pixar characters, from the first time I saw the film.
Lashes? Check. Beauty mark? Check. Rosy lips? Check.
Name? Francis. Vocal range? Bass-baritone. Manners: Uncouth and badass.
Long story short: a he that looks like a she. And whose anger trigger is being called a "ladybug" (or "mariquita" in Spanish), in spite of being an unmistakeable Coccinella septempunctata.
For more information, Francis is an actor and a drag queen (what a profession!),
and explicitly referred to by other bugs as being male ("a guy" and "he"). Except by those who think he is a she, that is!

Exhibit number four: Hinzite and Kunzite. (Highlight if you don't get the pun)
For those who don't understand the pun: "Hinz und Kunz" is the German equivalent of "Fulano y Mengano" or "Tom, Dick, and Stanley."

The Catalan dub of Sailor Moon I watched on Club Super3 as a weekday afternoon cartoon gave Zoisite (the more feminine, strawberry blond one) a woman's voice and the pronoun "she" ("ella"), but I could see it was a man through the dub and the pronoun. Those shoulders were too broad and that chest too flat for Kunzite's fellow officer to be female, and besides, the other generals at Queen Beryl's service were also male and wore the same uniform... (After all, the military of several nations, like organized religion, has enforced gender seggregation for ages with rather queer results...)
Zoisite was the third fictional character whose death I wept in my life, after Mufasa and Bambi's mum. I mean, I'll kill Queen Beryl like I'll kill Scar and Gaston for ruining my childhood...

Exhibit number five: Peach Blossom and Snow Bunny.
The blond one's name is Yukito, "Snow Rabbit." The dark one's name is Tóya, "Peach Blossom."
They are classmates in their late teens and rarely seen separated from one another, and both of them are suave and fond of the arts (though Tóya can be tough with his little sister and female admirers).
Both of them have acted in their school production of Cinderella, with the whole cast in drag, Tóya starring as the orphan maid and Yukito as her unlikely fairy godperson. They have also starred together in a period film for school, though both of them played male roles in that one.
Tóya even sacrifices his supernatural powers to sacrifice a dying Yukito.
And both of them are doubtlessly male.
Reader, you do the maths to realize what I knew from the moment I got to see these two in Cardcaptor on Club Super 3.

Exhibit number six: Your Anus and Neptune.

The teal-haired lady is called Michiru, a Pisces, a graceful and talented violinist and composer.
The person with short fair hair, who looks like me and like Brienne of Tarth, is called Haruka, an Aquarius endowed with rather masculine manners (like me), and is into every kind of racing. My first impression was that of Haruka being male, but after seeing her shirt a little closer and hearing her contralto voice, there was no doubt of her real gender.
Both girls are learned and well-educated wealthy scions in their late teens, and classmates as well, they date each other and are rarely seen without one another. At least by daylight. By moonlight, they're an invincible battle couple.
And both are so badass and so cultured, always, that the Inner Senshi (the main five) are second to them.
And they also happen to be my Sailor Moon OTP since early childhood...

Exhibit number seven: A Fishy Eye.

At first, Fisheye hatched from an egg underwater in the Pacific, growing into a beautiful and poisonous dragonfish. A male dragonfish.
Then everything changed when the Dead Moon attacked.
Now Fisheye can breathe air and stand on his own two feet.
And, sent by his queen to find the golden dream mirror that conceals a powerful alicorn,
he targets good-looking young men in creative professions (fashion designers, fairytale illustrators, ballet teachers...), whom he approaches donning women's clothing. And yes, he hangs around in bars (or, at least, in the Dead Moon's den of iniquity).
The Catalan dub I saw of Sailor Moon in Club Super3 gave Ull de Peix (that's literally "Fish-Eye") the Zoisite Treatment, which consists of a mezzosoprano voice (Castration implied? The pillar and the stones?) and the female pronoun "she" ("ella"). Still, with that fishy thorax shape and that fawning over young men, it was doubtless that Fisheye is male. Like in the case of Zoisite, I saw through the voice and the pronoun.

Exhibit number eight: Granny, what a pink frock you have! Granny, what a maid's uniform you have!

Every single Westerner has surely heard the story of Red Riding Hood as a child, and how the big bad wolf of the tale put the old grandmother's frock and bonnet on to fool the innocent girl (and how RRH fell for it, despite a big bad wolf resembling her nan as much as the MGM lion resembles Sean Bean).
In the Shrek saga, we are shown what Wolfie did after he expelled the stones the huntsman filled him with. Putting on the frock and bonnet that seem to have grown onto him, and hanging around in bars. A rightish fairy godmother has condemned him as "gender-confused..."
During Rumplestiltskin's usurpation of the Kingdom Far Far Away, Wolfie was employed at court as Royal Wigmaster (wig handler) to the crowned imp, trading his usual pink frock and bonnet for a French maid uniform. For such an eighteenth-century powdered wig needs a lot of care...

Exhibit number nine: He's a lumberjack and he's okay...
He goes to the lavatory squatting.
Not convinced?
He has buttered scones for tea.
Not convinced?
He likes to press wildflowers.
A little suspicious... Still not convinced?
He puts on women's clothing and hangs around in bars.
(I am imagining your reactions by now)
He wears high heels, suspenders, and a bra.
And he hangs around in bars...
And he wishes he were a girly just like his dear papa (and like his Austrian Onkel Walter).
(Sorry, rightish bigots out there, this is not the Brawny lumberjack...)
But this Monty Python sketch surprised me to the core.

Exhibit number ten: Fluorite and Black Steel

All right, I first got to know Fai and Kurogane when I was in my early teens (two or three years ere I met Renly and Loras), but soon they became an OTP of mine and I even purchased their exclusive chess piece figurines, which are among my greatest treasures.
These two have got amazing chemistry, much like other of my queer OTPs, coupled with the fact that I share Fai's hair colour, haircut, and cheerful upbeat personality (which made him part of my hit list). And there's also Fai's tendency to annoy Kurogane by calling him names like "Kurorin" and "Kuropon", with the dark warrior's subsequent anger, a running gag that always makes me laugh.
Their relationship unfolds like a flower, as we learn the tragic backstories of both strange companions and both of them come face to face with the past, showing that they do care for one another.

A DAY OF PRIDE

the show must go on
the show must go on
inside my heart is breaking
my make-up may be flaking
but my smile still stays on.
whatever happens, i'll leave it all to chance
another heartache, another failed romance
on and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
i guess i'm learning, i must be warmer now
i'll soon be turning, round the corner now
outside the dawn breaking
but inside in the dark i'm aching to be free
the show must go on
the show must go on
inside my heart is breaking
my make-up may be flaking
but my smile still stays on
my soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die
i can fly - my friends
the show must go on
the show must go on
i'll face it with a grin
i'm never giving in
on - with the show -
i'll top the bill; i'll overkill
i have to find the will to carry on
on with the -
on with the show -
the show must go on...

After a short break of silence, the rider resumed his tale:
"In the bloody days of old King Charles the Ninth, this sword turned many a Swedish lady into a dowager. I'm thinking about that right now. Nowadays, we don't any longer use our steel on our own countrymen. Do you see who it is, that gentleman who carefully and respectfully, yet as a good friend, lies asleep by the King in that wagon? That's Banér. His father himself was beheaded by the King's father. Now, both the sons are sleeping together like brothers."
"Yes indeed, new times have come for us Swedes", the gunner replied, as he pushed his hands to the nape of his neck and fell fast asleep.

The King had already closed his eyes beside his gallant Banér. His father's old enemies and their descendants had finally forgotten all of the old grudges before his chivalry and sense of justice, becoming his devoted friends.

From "Days of Victories" (translated from the Swedish of Werner von Heidenstam)

Two or three years later, their skill as swordsmen knew no equal, as their strength and speed increased. Both Rainer and Laurent had already developed tenor voices and started to grow little wisps of hair on their chests, though Rainer's dark wisps grew earlier and quicker than those of his half-French best friend. The uniforms, which once made them look cute as children, now made them look dashing as youths. It was then, when thoughts of love tend to fill the fiery, changing hearts of young people, that both of them discovered that they were not immune to that feeling.
Perchance it had started in the Turnhalle, when crossing swords and beholding each other's sparkling eyes above the flashing blades. Perchance it had started in the courtyard that winter, when the Lorrainian threw a white, soft snowball at his friend to cheer him up. Perchance it had started when they were riding on horseback, when the lindens where in bloom, and Rainer nearly fell off his steed, had not young Tyrell quickly reacted and helped him up on his saddle again. Perchance it had started in their bedroom in midwinter, as both youngsters were poring over Envers et contre tous by Amédée Achard: the novel Laurent had wished for and received under the star-decked fir tree.
Or perchance the flame of love began to glow in all four of these scenarios.
Rainer was now tall and broad-shouldered, twinkles in his sky blue eyes, a shade of black fuzz on his upper lip, and a well-developed chest due to his Baratheon heritage and devotion to exercise. The uniform fit him like it once had fit his brother. Yet, beneath that dashing blue jacket, he began to feel his heart throb nearly out of his chest every time Laurent touched him or looked at him. With his hair and eyes the colour of liquid gold or polished amber, and skin soft and fair as peaches and cream... young Tyrell, shorter and more fragile than his roommate, seemed to have something that stirred Rainer deep inside his chest, setting his heart and lungs on fire. For a while, he grew pensive and did not dare to speak to the one who made him falter, to whom he had recently lost, time after time, during their fencing lessons. Or to read historical novels in French together. Rainer Baratheon, now more reserved, had lost his usual smile and self-confidence, and the sparkles in his eyes had become little flames. Soon, he was ablaze, seared by this unknown feeling, until, one evening, Laurent took him to the military hospital, sensing that his good friend may have fallen ill with a blazing fever, a cold sweat, and apathy so strange in a usually cheerful and lively cadet. And the dark-haired youth now even lost consciousness sometimes at class!
Strangely enough, the mercury reported 37 degrees Celsius: Rainer's system was in perfect health as it always had been, even though a revolution was taking place within him.
Still, the half-French cadet wondered how his friend might have changed so radically in so little time. Perchance it was, like in the old fairytale, a shard of magic mirror swallowed or breathed in, that had reached his young heart and frozen it cold and hard. Yet Rainer was neither cold nor hard. No. He was on fire, and he faltered, blushing and muttering instead of talking in his usual tone.
And then, as unexpectedly as it had happened to Rainer, Laurent had started to feel the same. Now he felt admiration towards his manlier friend, now concern and wonder at his startling change of heart... and now he wished to lose himself in those shimmering summer lakes that were the other's eyes, run his fingers through that raven hair, lean against that sculptured chest and listen to the steady heartbeat and equally steady breathing of such a dashing... Such a wistful wish! Was that more than a recurring daydream? Could that be possible? Had something more than friendship found a way into their changing young hearts? It had, of course.
Now they were invited into the grand mansions of Lichterfelde whenever there was a ball, a soirée, or any other society event. The cadets received, thus, an initiation into high society and a chance to show their dancing skills. Yet sometimes Rainer wished Laurent were a maiden, and vice versa. The brilliantly lighted bridegrooms contained the flower of Prussian society: daughters of courtiers, industrialists, and landowners, dressed in their best and most colourful silks and satins. Yet neither the Lorrainian nor the Sturmländer felt a shadow of a thrill, as they smiled ironically and put on a face of courtesy when they invited the maidens to dance. Rather, they would seek each other and look at each other with each other's eyes.
By night, they slept no longer in separate beds. They had hitherto read books in the same bed, Laurent reading aloud to Rainer, or played with their soldiers. But they had slept each in his bed. That began to change. Now Rainer slept with Laurent, now Laurent with Rainer, both in their soft white shifts, embracing and tickling each other. And always did young Tyrell lay his head to rest on young Baratheon, on his chest or on his solar plexus, listening to the soothing sounds that came from his recovering system, after a long day of training and studying.
The year after, one stormy evening, both of them finally found the right words. At unison.
"Je t'aime", the half-French youth quickly whispered, before he snuggled up himself beneath the sheets.
"Und ich liebe dich!", Rainer Baratheon replied, blushing and honestly looking at him.
Then, he seized Laurent by the shoulders, still looking at him, and gave the blond youth a passionate kiss. On his lips. It lasted for five seconds, but it seemed that time had stopped for them... until their lips parted.
In response, Tyrell nearly lost consciousness. His heart skipped a beat, his lungs stopped, and he burst into tears not worthy of an officer, as he embraced his roommate, as strong as he could, as if he would lose his greatest treasure in some way or other.
"You know... we were by no means the first ones. Remember what we have learned. Alexander the Great and Hephaestion...", Rainer explained, as he ran his fine fingers through cascades of dark gold.
"Or Gustavus Adolphus and Banér...", Laurent, who had now plunged into the clear lakes of a pair of Baratheon eyes, replied.
"Frederick the Great and Lieutenant von Katte... But what am I thinking of? Weren't all of those couples star-crossed?", Rainer tried to regain his reason.
"If that is the case, I hope we're not star-crossed at the end of the day", was the Lorrainian's honest reply. Little did both cadets know about their future. They were completely unaware that theirs would be a star-crossed romance as well. To them, as to young people in general, the present was all that they could think of.
"Bonne nuit."
"Bonne nuit."
As they put out the light and Rainer took his place in Laurent's bed, they shared a second kiss, one that sent both ice and fire through their adolescent veins.
Soon they had to conceal their secret by daylight, pretending to be best friends in everyone's eyes, the truth being revealed in the dark of the night.
