WHAT IF... LIEUTENANT VON KATTE SURVIVED?
Five months had passed since the day of their escape, five months since Frederick had finally left behind all that made him miserable. It had been difficult at first, to be sure, but seeing his new life unfold before him made years of abuse and hardship with it for him.
A palace had been traded in for a cottage, uniform for a tunic and breeches, and marching grounds for tilled soil.
Most of all, the former prince loved watching Katte mill about in their home, loved that the little village in which they lived said nothing of their arrangement, nothing of his former status. They were simply two young men trying to survive in a tumultuous world.
Finally, Frederick felt at home.
