MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR MERCURIAL STYLE / ENNEATYPE SEVEN

MAKING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR MERCURIAL STYLE / ENNEATYPE SEVEN #Enneatype7

You know how to live and to feel and you have a tremendous appreciation for romance—these are among

the strengths that infuse your life. To feel more fulfilled and successful in life, especially in your relationships, work on developing some detachment and restraint..

Exercise 1

Try to imagine what it would be like not

to experience emotions or to feel involved with people.

Try to experience what it would be like to read a book (Les Misérables, an Andersen fairytale, a Shakespearean tragedy), watch a movie (Up, Bambi, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Order of the Phoenix), listen to music (a Shakespearean opera, Bach), or be with a person without having an emotional reaction. Pretend that you are an actress and have to play a Solitary/Enneatype Five role. Remember that this is just an exercise (and a difficult one at that)—we’re not suggesting that you try to become Solitary/a Five, only that you begin to experience the difference between thoroughly emotional and thoroughly non-emotional.

If you cannot figure out how a Solitary/Five person would evaluate a person or a movie (especially a heartfelt scene like the death of Ellie, that of Mufasa, that of Sirius Black, the transformation back into humans of the Beast-Prince and his courtiers, the transformation into human of Ariel) without depending on feelings, you may not realize the extent to which you rely on, and overreact to, your feelings.

Exercise 2

Observe your feelings. As you go through your day, imagine that you are sitting in a cinema watching yourself on the screen. Or imagine that there is another you, an observer, inside your head who is watching everything that you experience. As you become skilled at developing this dual sense of yourself, tell your observing self to watch especially for your feelings. Keep an eye out for changes in feelings and emotions. Keep track of how and when they change. If you like, keep a running list of each time you have a change in feeling—such as the moment you become disappointed with someone or something.

Exercise 3

When you have developed some skill at observing your feelings and their changes, try to disown your feelings.

Every time you notice a feeling or a change

in feeling, say to yourself, “It’s only a feeling.” For example, if your

lover does something stupid and you find yourself suddenly despising him or her for it, stand back from that feeling and do not claim it, or any other feeling, as your

own. Let the moment pass without a feeling attached to it.

Most important, do not react to that feeling. Again, this is just an exercise, not a suggestion that you no longer have feelings. If you practice it, you will find that you can

develop unexpected control over what usually controls you. Try it when you get depressed. Insist to yourself that no matter how awful it feels, your depression is only a feeling; it is not the way the world is.

Exercise 4

Modulate your feelings. Every time you have a strong emotional reaction, imagine that you are turning a dial that lowers its intensity. Turn the reaction down 10

percent, then another 10 percent.

Exercise 5

Having observed and distanced yourself from your feelings and having consciously controlled them, try to observe your feelings about the people in your life and note exactly when they change for the worse. Each time

you find yourself becoming angry or disappointed with someone, or suddenly beginning to hate that person, ask

yourself whether you are reacting unfavorably to what you perceive as flaws in him or her. As soon as you catch yourself having this kind of a negative reaction,

immediately return to Exercise 3 and disown the feeling.

Simply observe that you have a hard time accepting a person’s humanness, but do not act on your negative feeling in any way.

Exercise 6

Observe the degree to which you polarize people into categories of all-good individuals whom you love and

adore, and all-bad persons whom you hate and revile. For each person you idealize, think of some of his or her traits

that are not so wonderful. Similarly, for those whom you despise, force yourself to think of some of their acceptable

or admirable qualities. Resist sudden shifts of feeling about any person when you do this exercise. If you find

yourself suddenly beginning to hate a person whom you’ve been idealizing because you’ve thought of an unpleasant trait, try Exercises 3 and 4.

The preceding exercises should provide some preparation for the next set, aimed at helping you to develop some control over your appetites and to strengthen your ability to think before you react. You

share your tendency to live spontaneously in the present with the Dramatic and the Adventurous types. Turn back

to this page and practice the Dramatic Exercises 3 (Stopand count to ten, think of the Mägo de Oz lyric "Es sabio contar hasta diez") and 4 (Plan). From the Adventurous exercises on this page, concentrate on Exercises 1 (Think from your head, not from your appetites), 2 (Worry a little), and 3 (Safeguard yourself). All these exercises are in the New Personality Self-Portrait, which can be downloaded on PDF if you Google

"New Personality Self-Portrait Mercurial Adam AIDS" (the first example they give of my Personality Style is a flamboyant gay opera star who tragically dies in the '80s HIV epidemic)

Exercise 7

To help prevent overindulging, time it. If you want one cookie (or one sweater) but you usually eat the whole box (or buy up the whole shop), carry a stopwatch or other

watch that has a timer. Or use the timer app on your phone. Take one cookie (purchase one sweater). Now set your timer to go off in one hour (or half if you are really impulsive). You can have another cookie (make another purchase) one hour (or half) from now. Usually the urge will have passed by that

time. If not, take one more cookie (make one more purchase) and set the timer to go off in another hour (or half).

Exercise 8

Now, take your attention off yourself and focus on the other people in your life. For each important person, concentrate on identifying his or her feelings, needs, and expectations from relationships. Look especially for ways

in which each person’s feelings, needs, and expectations are different from yours. If you and that you have negative or disappointed feelings when you think about these differences, go back to Exercises 3 and 5.

THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS

The seven deadly sins are actually feelings that have got rational reasons...

  1. Pride is, at heart, self-esteem, being pleased with one's own status, taken to the extreme.
  2. Envy is a useful tool for comparing one's own status to that of others, and it drives one to surpass others, and thus to rise, in status.
  3. Anger is the fight half of the fight-or-flight reaction, meant to impose on enemies and to defend one's own rights and possessions.
  4. Laziness, or rather apathy, is just the state of mind when one is in a no-mood without any emotions and just needs to relax after too many passions and too much pressure.
  5. Greed is just raising one's number of possessions for extra security. For being extra secured.
  6. Gluttony is just like greed but applied to consumption: overfeeding for extra security. For being extra secured.
  7. Lust is love of the erotic kind that has grown too passionate and beyond the lover's control.

CLAUDIA'S DREAM OF THE INSANE

Here's another snippet about the perception of mental health in Swedish literature, once more from an allegorical tale.
Pontius Pilate's wife Claudia has a dream on the Holy Thursday night...
As an aspie myself, and now going through harsh times because of my emotional dysregulation (today I had ONE OF THE WORST DAYS IN MY LIFE), I read this snippet from Selma Lagerlöf's "Den heliga Veronikas svetteduk" with tears in my eyes. When would Jesus come and heal the insane once more??? Notice the part I have put in bold: Claudia saw "those who constantly mourned a sorrow they could not name." Emotional dysregulation: the lifetime curse bestowed on me.

att komma in.

ILL-GRANTED WISHES IN DOKIDOKI PRECURE

From Happy Innocent Musume Senshi blog (excerpts):

One of the games that I really like is Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies for the Nintendo DS.
Fygg Screenshot
A fygg (from fig + Yggdrasil), the in-universe counterpart of the Forbidden Fruit.

Among many interesting things in this game are subplots that form the basis for a large part of the beginning of the game.  As part of the main plot, fyggs or fruits from a Celestrial Tree fall down below to the terrestrial plane.  These fyggs purport to be able to grant the desires of people that eat the fygg,  Yet, the granting of the desires turns out to be quite problematic.  The fygg turns the person into a monster, that as the heroine, one must defeat.  After the monster is defeated, we find that the original person was usually quite ordinary, with ordinary faults and failings.  These made for quite interesting and often moving subplots to the game.
Those of us who have been watching DokiDoki Precure will likely recognize this theme.  The villains from the Selfish Kingdom “grant the wish” of their victims by turning their heart black, stealing their hearts, and using these dark hearts to create a monster that creates havoc until the Precures come to defeat the Selfishness and return the cleansed hearts to the victims.
So, what is wrong with one’s wishes being granted?  That is a good question, and I think that the answer is a bit complex.  I think that one of the points in both the game and in DokiDoki Precure is that victims wishes are not really being granted.  I think that maybe the best way to explain is that these are the wishes of their False Self, or the part that we all have inside that is not aligned with Good, like the popular Western motif of the little devil on our shoulder.  Our True Self is that which is aligned with the little angel on our shoulder.  As you recall, in DokiDoki, the victim often resists the urge that the villain eventually uses to steal their hearts.
I think that there is an assumption in both Dragon Quest IX and in DokiDoki Precure, that most of us truly wish to be good, and that this wish trumps any self centered desires that we may have.  As the Dragon Quest game proceeds into the larger story line, we find that the fyggs are actually…oh oops…spoilers.  Well, I can say that the fyggs themselves are not evil either, and the wishes of the victims are not evil wishes, they were just corrupted.  In fact, we find out later in the game that fyggs are actually fruits from the Divine in Her Daughter form.  In the Dragon Quest game, after the victim of the corruption is purified, the energy from her wishes are also purified.
As I am writing, I am having a really hard time being able to put into words the difference between the corrupt wishes and the purified wishes.  Even if I were to give spoilers and specifics, it would be hard.
In talking with Cure Dolly, who watches DokiDoki Precure with Japanese subtitles, she has mentioned that she  could imagine how difficult it would be for the translators.
One of the things that she explained was about the Selfish Kingdom and the monsters, “Selfishnesses.”  If I understand correctly, selfish is not really the precise term, but there is no equivalent in Japanese.  From what I have been told, in Japanese culture, there is an expectation that people will think of the group and community first, and to do otherwise is considered quite rude.  For example, it is my understanding that a statement that seems positive to a Western mind, “Do what you want to do,” is considered quite insulting in Japanese culture.  The closest translation to this concept is selfish, from what I have been told.
This takes me back to the premise of this article.  I think that in DokiDoki Precure and in DragonQuest IX, it is not the wishes themselves that are problematic. We should have dreams and wishes.  What is problematic is when these wishes only relate to one’s own personal well-being without considering the group or the society.

Teasugarsalt writes:
Shugo Chara, the anime version, has a section in it where there is a false-wish-granting young jeweller who turns the eggs in people’s hearts, not into despair laden x-eggs, but into confused riddle-eggs that turn children into what they thought they wanted to be in a totally out of control fashion. Amu-chan’s task is to help these children get to the heart of *why* they had their original wish, and it’s usually a quite *unselfish* reason! When they see they aren’t helping people the way they wanted to by fulfilling only the form of their wishes, then she can clear their heart’s eggs.
I think people are really good, and when they wish for things, they can make mistakes about the best way to accomplish what they really, deep down, want. But usually, what they really want is good, I think, if they could only find a better way to get it.

My own opinion (Ice and Fire/Othello/Faust/Alexandra Romanova)
I am thinking of the Dragonstoners and how they relate to this. The Red Priestess has this black and white way of thinking (she tells Davos that there are no shades, everyone is either good or evil)... Her MO is corrupting Stannis (for goals still unknown). Meli fires Stannis up with the passions he has kept in check until he met her (jealousy of Renly, wishes for approval). And, once he is convinced, he finally has some pleasure: they make love on the Painted Table: the culmination of his surrender to her symbolized by this act: he literally yields to her, like Othello to Iago or Alexandra to Rasputin. Then come the regrets for having killed Renly (the old Cain and Abel story), but he has become WIRED on Meli and her "you're the messiah" rant. Davos doesn't trust Meli, like most innocent people disapprove of corruptors (Tiana of Facilier, the female cast of Othello disapprove of Iago), but his words can't reach Stannis's heart. As little as Desdemona's words can reach Othello's.
Comparing Melisandre to the Jikochuu cadres and Loulou de Morcel... "I'll make your wish come true!" "This is a Magical Jewel. It will make your heart's desire come true". Even if that wish means killing lovable loved ones in a fit of rage. Othello, Heinrich Faust, and Stannis Baratheon are all three textbook cases of this phenomenon. Neither of them has his heart literally taken out, but all of them cling to their tempters, believing that they're doing "the right things", and regret upon having taken the life of a precious person.

SINNLIGT STÖRDA FÖRR OCH NU I: TEXTER

Something I should have done during this summer:
Upload these two Swedish classical literary fragments about nuthouses and their inmates, to reflect upon:

I. Zachris Topelius. Ur Fritänkaren. Bok III Kapitel XIII, "De vises konung bland dârar".
Commentary: Like the Fools' Tower or "Gugelhupf" in Austria, the Danviken Nuthouse (the first in Sweden) was a product of the Enlightenment. The story takes place during the reign of Gustavus III (mid-to-late 18th century), and the King himself is coming to pay the nuthouse a visit, which leads to "Welcome Mr. Gustavus" style preparations.

konungen själv, ville besöka Danviken i dag klockan tre

förstå att hon vore Pompadour;

.

II. Helena Nyblom. Ur "Glädjens lustfärd".

Commentary: This is an allegorical tale, thus, the place where it is set can be any country. However, the presence of an isolated nuthouse hints at an 18th- or 19th-century setting. In this story, Happiness descends upon Earth, only to be rejected by people of all the different social strata.

i glädje?
.»

"LOULOU", THY NAME IS HOSHIIWA

The name of the female general in Happiness Charge Precure (the lolita in pink with the parasol), hitherto known by my fan nickname "Loulou" (much like "Katla"/Valdis), has been finally revealed in this week's episode. So, from this day on, we will refer to her as Hoshiiwa:
"Let them eat cake", she says,
just like Marie Antoinette...
From left to right: Namakerda, Hoshiiwa, Queen Mirage, "Gerhard" (provisory fan nickname),
and the Mirror Mirror (yes, the Queen consults it like in the fairytale).
All five came out of this accidentally opened casket (Who did it? Let's follow the series to find out),
in a rather Pandora-like manner.
Introduced with the speaking sobriquet "the wealthy lady who yearns for all", taking delight in muggles' despair (in her own words, it's "the sweet that tastes the best")... She can turn despair into sweets, that she relishes while listening to her victims' cries of despair: "This is when I, the wealthy lady Hoshiiwa, feel the most happy!" In other words, this wench is Schadenfreude personified! As such, she is more than just a looker (violet eyes and whitish curls... and her Lolita dress!)...
Thus, it should not be tolerated to mess up her teatime... In spite of not being aggressive at all, she's one drama queen!
Some more Hoshiiwa pics (because she's so so!):

ALSO SPRACH FRÄULEIN DERMARK

A recent bible for creating fictional characters happened to fall recently into my hands.
I identify myself mostly with this character type/archetype:
The FREE SPIRIT: eternal optimist, she dances to unheard tunes. Playful and fun-loving, she travels through life with a hop, skip and a jump, always stopping to smell the flowers and admire the pretty colors. She acts on a whim and follows her heart, not her head.
Motivated by following her heart.

Katinka and many other of my female OC:s (in fact, most of them! Think Réna/Ilona, Hedwig, Ulrika) are Free Spirits as well, while the lead male roster in my works tends to consist of dark and conflicted Romantic heroes (Gustavus, Katinka's POW beau turned spouse, for instance).
A more complete personality typology listed me as a Mercurial. Think of a person with mercury poisoning (AKA Mad Hatter Syndrome): http://www.ptypes.com/mercurial.html
