Let's face it: we all remember old Churchill saying, during the war, that he had nothing to offer but "blood, sweat, and tears." But it was not that way. There was actually a fourth item on the list of "blood, toil (i.e. effort), sweat, and tears." Still, it felt a bit long, and a tripartite statement like the motto of France had got more rhythm. One of the items on the list had to go. And, knowing how phlegmatic the Britons are, it just had to be the toil.
