THREE LI'L KITTIES AND A KAPPA GENOCIDE

Star*Twinkle Pretty Cure - Episode 37
My Own Review
THREE LI'L KITTIES AND A KAPPA GENOCIDE

We are now wrapping up the month of October, and that means it is almost time for Halloween – so of course, episode thirty-seven of Star ☆ Twinkle is the de rigueur Samhain (pronounced saawin) episode.
Lala looking forward to the dress up contest
In this episode, Lala gets hold of a leaflet from Mihoshi High Street with information about a dress up contest for Halloween. Her whole class decides to enter the competition. They aren’t the only ones, as some familiar faces join the fun, including Kappard. Not that Kappard intended to get involved…
Hikaru, Lala, Sakurako Himenojou and some other characters, dressed up for the contest
As you can imagine, there are plenty of costumes to be seen in this episode. Hikaru’s class goes for a cryptid theme. And Sakurako as Mothwoman (FRICKING MOTHWOMAN) completely steals the spotlight...
Una familia muy floral
Elena, Madoka, and Yuni are Las Tres Gatas
Apparently Elena gets to wear two different costumes, but I’m fine with that. Amusingly, Yuni simply opts to use her true form; going as herself literally. Kind of a shame when she is (almost) a master of disguise. I like the sun and moon pendants on Elena and Madoka’s respective kitty collars; it’s a neat little touch. Yuni has a galaxy pendant because she's Cosmos.
Kappard proves to be surprisingly popular
Kappard gets to do a bit more than the usual antagonist role in this episode, starting with taking selfie photos with all the people dressed up (like these two sexy pumpkinettes). Naturally, they think he is in a kappa costume as well, and we also get some glimpses into Kappard’s past.
Kappard attacks
Of course, Kappard is still a villain, so when the others come across them a fight ensues. Thing is, PreCures need to do something to prevent Earthlings learning about the aliens in their midst. Fortunately, Hikaru has an idea.
Mihoshi Stars
The encounter with Kappard turns into a hero show, at least until they can move the fight away from civilians. We get a full on sentai-esque sequence with the Mihoshi Stars’ introductions and everything. It is some pretty amusing stuff.
A flashback featuring a young Kappard
We get a Kappard-focused flashback, showing us how he lost his planet and all of his kin to an invasion from another world. The Kappa Planet was drained dry of freshwater by the enemy, and everyone was dying of thirst, until only one kappa boy remained alive to tell the tale (guess who?) It also gives the audience an idea of why he firmly believes people from different planets are unable to get along. Of course, Cure Milkyway doesn’t believe that; her bond with her friends (or rather companions, ie nakama), some Earthlings and a Rainbowian, totally contradicts Kappard’s views.
This is actually a group photograph, but we’re focusing on the important characters here
The episode wraps up in the usual manner. It was quite a good one, and I did like learning a little more about Kappard’s past. I do wonder who was in charge of the forces that drained Kappard’s home planet of water; was it Darknest, or some other evil force?
I could totally see Kappard turning on Darknest in the future, perhaps aiding the Cures when they inevitably come to fight him.
Lala got a fair bit of focus in this episode, but ultimately, I’d say that this was very much Kappard’s episode. It’s nice to get to know our villains a little more.
Next time, looks like the plot gets back on track with an episode that focuses on Yuni as the search for Twinkle Imagination resumes once more. Ayewan will be back, too.

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
(Cue The Final Solution by Sabaton)
Oui, the Great and Powerful Kappard is the sole survivor of a genocide. And he was underage when said catastrophe occurred. THE FEELS. Knowing the trauma that lies beneath.

THE PIRATES OF SAMHAIN

Hugtto Pretty Cure
Episode 38 - My Own Review

THE PIRATES OF SAMHAIN

In the beginning of the episode, Harry and Hug-tan were wondering what with the Halloween decorations near the park and asked the girls about it. (Not after seeing a Halloween poster that scared the heck out of Harry and Hug-tan)

Hugtan decides to investigate, and is immediately freaked out. Harry has a similar reaction after he takes a look to see what made Hugtan cry. It’s a poster for a big Halloween event that is being sponsored by Hugman and Sumire’s magazine, so Hana thought she’d help out by designing a poster.

Emiru likes kaiju

The main event is a costume dance party, with the theme being dreams; that they just dress up as whatever they like. For Emiru, that would be a reptilian monster, whilst for Saaya it would be a megazord. Everyone is getting into the Halloween spirit, but there are two or three who don’t quite understand.

Ruru and Harry don’t really get Halloween
It falls to the others to explain just what Halloween is about.
Saaya, being more informed, looks it up and tells them that the 31st of October was the night where the ancient Celts ancestors’ spirits would return to them. Samhain, pronounced SAA-win.
Lulu and Harry still don’t quite get it, so Emiru decides that they should just go a little overboard to make up for it.

Saaya and Lulu remain as competitive as ever
Following that, everyone starts preparing for the Halloween event.

I don't think I even seen kids dressed up as Precures in previous seasons but it is nice to see the townspeople acknowledging the Precures.

Lulu didn't understand either about Halloween and the other girls showed them by getting decorations and costumes and learning more about Halloween. Harry commented that their world does not have Halloween since Crisis took over the world in their timeline. Harry and Hug-tan later walked around the festival and felt a sense of regret; he was hugging Hug-tan tightly and something was going on with him...
The event starts, and Harry is looking a little sad. He quickly puts that behind him, and focuses on the event. Of course, – the other girls are in their costumes as well.

I guess Saaya chose to be a fallen angel for Halloween. I like it

Lulu and Emiru looked wonderful as Pirate girls!
Seeing our Twin Love OTP as pirates, well, in pirate costumes means that the Master & Commander analogy is still red hot (well, Jack and Steve were royal officers, not pirates, but still heroes of the Age of Sail)... Even though Emiru still wanted a reptilian kaiju suit... PS. When is Talk Like A Pirate Day? The 19th of Sept, over a month ago...

Emiru and Lulu dressed as pirates – so good

It’s not just our friends who are preparing. Even Daigan is making sweets, though he finds himself struggling a bit with the finer points. He also gets an unexpected visitor.

Papple and Charalit were out promoting their agency while Daigan was left with the food decorations. (With little success) Ristle appeared and offered Daigan a high position at Crisis.

Ristle tells Daigan he can return to Criasu

Ristle shows up, and tells Daigan that he is welcome to go back to Criasu if he wants. He doesn’t have to decide immediately, but Ristle does give him a business card.

Although Daigan refused, Ristle left his card behind and Daigan placed in his pocket when Papple and Charalit returned.

The girls also happen to have several costumes for Hugtan to wear. They have a try a few, but that only increases Hugtan’s weariness levels.

Lulu detects that Angel!Hugtan’s weariness has increased by 78%
The girls stop dressing Hugtan in different costumes, and Hana just asks what she wants to dress up. Hugtan simply wants to dress as a PreCure. With that, the girls decide to get to work on Hugtan’s costume.

Daigan finds himself unable to resist the allure of Criasu, so he ends up summoning a Wild Theender. As it causes havoc at the event, the others go to confront.

Later, Daigan was getting annoyed over his food decorations and saw a girl complaining of friction blisters and is giving out negative energy. He decided to create a theender from the girl and was wrecking havoc in the festival.

A super special Halloween PreCure show
The fight against the Wild Theender is framed as part of the event, with each PreCure getting in an attack against their foe before they finish it off.

The girls entered the battle but they decided to make it part of the show in order to calm the crowd. Of course, the girls won and Daigan was left in defeat. Papple knew something was wrong with him and reprimanded him. She commented that people are enjoying his sweets and he learned his lesson already.

Papple admonishes Daigan

After the battle, Papple finds Daigan and gives him a good smack on the head. She also lets him know that the treats he made went down really well with the kids. All that hard work paid off.

Following that, Harry talks about how things would be if time stops, but is assured that the others will be there to meet the future head on.

Hugtan’s costume change is complete

After hearing from Saaya that Halloween or Samhain is a festival to remember the dearest who were lost to them, Harry felt a sense of sorrow and couldn't help thinking about his world. He told that he has no idea what kind of festivals they have since Crisis has his world in this freeze state. Luckily, the others gave some word of encouragement and promised him that they will free his world from Crisis.

Hug-Tan wore a Precure costume and everyone adore her. Although Harry swore he saw a blonde figure that looked like an older Hug-tan as a Precure!? But he kept mum (pun intended) about it as they continue to celebrate Halloween...

A familiar face briefly appears before Harry
The episode ends with everyone deciding to enjoy the rest of the night.

Despite being a Halloween episode, it is more of a set-up for the next few episodes as we are approaching the final quarter of the season. The focus was on Harry and Hug-tan since we learn that there was no concept of festivals or celebration since everyone was frozen in time by Crisis. Harry in particular felt that he lost a lot of things in his time and after seeing everyone happily celebrating, he knew that they must succeed in freeing everyone from his timeline.
You got to love the shot of Harry walking past in shadows, as it showed that he still has secrets yet to reveal to the girls and probably knew the true identify of Hug-tan. Seeing now it is confirmed that Hug-Tan is a Precure from the future and was reverted into a toddler for some reason. Furthermore, Ristle was getting desperate after failing to recruit Daigan and seeing how the next episode preview, he finally did the unthinkable and brought the girls and Harry to the future. A showdown is inevitable.

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
Seeing our Twin Love OTP as pirates, well, in pirate costumes means that the Master & Commander analogy is still red hot (well, Jack and Steve were royal officers, not pirates, but still heroes of the Age of Sail)... Even though Emiru still wanted a reptilian kaiju suit... PS. When is Talk Like A Pirate Day? The 19th of Sept, over a month ago...
Harry went for a furry... I mean, lycan ensemble with ears, tail, and paws in a silver gray and matching whisker and snout make-up, and, just like Lulu, he hails from a dystopian future where autumnal celebrations are something that has not been celebrated for decades, or maybe even centuries. As expected, it was Saaya who gave the two time-travellers a lecture on Samhain -pronounced SAA-wan or SAA-win; Celtic orthographies are deeper than the Marianas Trench- and later on dressed as a fallen angel (when I had expected something more druidic; voilà, she overturned her angelic transformed mode by making it all dark and leathery)... Werewolf!Harry was a nice touch to his characterisation as the Beast, while Homare went in a ten-gallon hat instead of... Wait. Jessie. Belle. Jessie-Belle. Jezebel... I see what you did there for a visual pun (smirk!).
Also... did Harry just remember Lenore? All while not identifying Homare as her? #FriendZone! The fact that he also saw Lenore in Hug-tan made me also think of the theory (we'll see if it's canon, but it's the most likely scenario) that Lenore is Hug-tan as an adult! (If not, there is always the possibility of a Les Mis AU where Lenore is Fantine, Harry is Valjean, and Hug-tan is Cosette -Ristle would be Javert, Papple and Daigan would make excellent Thénardiers, and Henrisato as Enjoltaire in a barricade subplot would be the icing on the cake!-...)

Daigan is back to the dark side, but only for today because he was under pressure... Also, at his sweetstand he sold moray eel-shaped sweets (patterned after the Muraena helena, or Mediterranean moray). Also, Ristle pulling His Card out once more. But Daigan's Moment of Weakness came, this time, from a pretty stubborn chocolate pen. So much ado about nothing!
The victim and source of the week was a twenty-something trick-or-treater, dressed as a ghost ragdoll, who is upset when she got a friction blister when walking, right when the festival's costume contest was about to begin, and thus thought that it was the worst time for her to get a friction blister (she hadn't pocketed any painkillers or bandages)...
The post-battle twit-slap Papple gave Daigan was adorable. I can already see this straight woman and funny guy as husband and wife, of the kind that have been married for decades - and Charalit as either their child or nephew.
This was a fun episode. Emiru and Lulu (our les OTP for this continuity) wearing matching pirate outfits was great, and I do like Saaya’s fallen angel costume a lot as well.
We got some more hints about the connection between Harry and Hugtan. I am curious about the ‘lost things stay lost’ line though. Speculation suggests that Hugtan’s true form is the girl Harry sees at the end of the episode, but Hugtan hasn’t exactly been lost. I wonder if the situation is a little more complicated than that.
This episode had some great funny moments as well. I’m glad to see that Saaya and Lulu remain competitive with each other. A decent Halloween episode.

My Own Review - Episode 37

CIEL RENTRE À PARIS?

The thorough Samhain decoraitons even feature a vampire garçon (though I think, IMOHO, that Akira should don some make-up to appear far paler).

Ciel has just made this pumpkin cream... the best part is the sugar thread lace...
doesn't it look really professional?

The apple in the middle is a jack o'lantern!

Having criticised Ciel’s sweets without even trying them, Madame Solène then takes a look around Ciel’s shop. She isn’t exactly filled with praise for it, either.

In my headcanon, Solène is a portmanteau of her full name, Solange-Hélène.
She has come to take Ciel back to Paris... wondering why she has chosen this provincial town in the hinterland of an Asian island nation...

But if she wants to take Ciel back to la Ville Lumière,
Solène will first have to pass over a dead Bilberry.

Luckily, our bifauxnen leader and our hardcore rocker are right there to restrain a warp-spasming reformed PFM in the nick of time.

Aoi's duh face. Even more with Solène's and the highschoolers'.

Ciel does some martial arts to prove Ichigozaka local colour.
Solène is not amused.

Maybe the sight of her ward drenched in perspiration has set her off.

The shopping district of Ichigozaka is not even second to the Champs-Élysées.

Well, Solène: la calle Enmedio in Castellón is not even second to the Champs-Élysées either.

AKIRA: ...but the people here are warm-hearted and kind!!
(Akira taking a stand for the fruit and veg shop, and for all of Ichigozaka... that's my leader...)

YUKARI: Pourquoi Paris? For the cosmopolitanism, or some other good reason?

SOLÈNE: If she stops here in Ichigozaka, her dreams, her hopes, will never come true.

Yukari inquires as to why it has to be Paris. The reason is that Paris will provide a world-class stage for Ciel. We then get a flashback showing us when Madame Solène first discovered Ciel’s talents.

Mon Trésor (Poe reference!), the Left Bank pâtisserie where Ciel once worked.

The queue outside Mon Trésor is outright called "la Seine!"

***Flashback to Paris a few years before***

Solène initially asked Jean-Pierre, but he turned her down

Solène et Jean-Pierre

Ciel just happened to be present at that time, and that was when Solène invited her to come along with her. Ciel accepted.
Sometime after that, Ciel just disappeared from Paris, from France, from Europe – that was when she arrived in Ichigozaka, right across the globe. Solène has sought her out because the World Pâtisserie Contest will be held in Paris. Hearing that has the girls start feeling down, and even question why Ciel chose to be with them.

BILBERRY: You don't need to act like a goody-two-shoes. You're free to do as you please.

CIEL: Thank you, Bilberry!!

All of the girls seem to be worried about what Ciel’s future holds, including Ciel herself. Fortunately, Ciel has someone to give her some advice – which is to simply do what she wants. To follow her heart.

BILBERRY: I... am not encouraging you...!! It's so foolish...
Tsundere attitude confirmed. And she's also that flustered for a good reason.

Anyways, Ciel cheers up and she makes it clear that she doesn’t intend to go to Paris.
Just in time for Elysio to show up and stain a jack o'lantern in darkness...

PARFAIT ÉTOILE!

The battle plays out as you’d expect, except this pumpkin monster is able to split apart. Its lower half (torso) crashes down on Custard, Gelato, and --most relevantly-- Macaron and Chocolat, which distracts Parfait.

Like Atlas, our OTP now has to shoulder the weight of the heavenly vault -or the more mundane Samhain counterpart thereof-.

Elysio binds Parfait down while her attention is elsewhere.

Parfait falls to the ground, where Elysio stares and glares for a while – it cuts back and forth between the two opposing sides. Turns out the other Cures aren’t defeated yet, either.

GO CHOCOLAT!! ALLEZ ALLEZ!! Look at how much of a strain... the younger teens appear to take it far worse... not to mention Macaron... GO CHOCOLAT!! IT'S JUST A HOLLOW PUMPKIN, NO MATCH FOR YOUR STRENGTH AT ALL!

Following which, Macaron Julienne is used to break Parfait's ties.

Cure Gelato plays some Smashing Pumpkins with those radass ice boxing gloves, and then the finishing move is deployed as usual. With the monster of the week defeated, Elysio retreats. After that, the girls get back to making sweets.

In true Proust style (also, Ratatouille the Pixar film revisits the same scene from À la recherche du temps perdu), Solène's first spoonful of pumpkin pudding...

...triggers memories of her youth in the Rhône Valley countryside.

SOLÈNE: Oh la vache! Have you even used French butter?

Madame Solène tries the pumpkin pudding, and she loves it. Ciel then tells her that she learned consideration for the people she makes sweets for, and that she shows Solène the heights she can fly to as a pâtissière.
Madame Solène accepts that answer, though she suggests that Ciel should participate in the contest with the KiraPâti.

All Elysio can do is look on and wait, and bid his time.
Unlike his partner, Elysio is all sang-froid.

We end with a glimpse of the pitiable state Glaive has reduced Diaval to.
The plot definitely thickens...

Especially with the Glaivemobile becoming a Werewolf (better than a Jaguar, right)?

EPILOGUE: BACKSTORY / RETURN TO PARIS (FROM THE FILM)

Jean-Pierre lecturing the twins

Kirarin and Pikalio

When Kirarin became Ciel for the first time.

That attire Yukari and Akira are donning as they stroll along the Left Bank.
They look like straight out of a classic film...
Really cements the fact that my OTP is canon.

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
That wraps up episode 37, and it was certainly predictable – but it’s a pretty common thing you’ll see in anime. A character looks like they’ll have to leave, but they don’t in the end. A bit like when Ami was to leave for Berlin in Sailor Moon R...
The main plot itself is nothing new since we have seen it in so many shows, of how one character got an offering to chase their dream in a foreign land but because of his/her commitment to her friends (nakama), s/he can't go and the others questioned themselves are they holding that person back.
It's a dead horse plot. But still interesting especially with Solène's dynamics with the KiraPâti staff. A bit like when Fawlty Towers gets visits from psychoanalysts/Germans/Yanks/Lord Melbury... or a guest dies, or the health inspector comes. The way the dead horse premise was carried out is refreshing and reminds me of Fawlty Towers, especially with a tsundere Bilberry in the role of Mr. Fawlty (another refreshing note). Another thing that makes this episode interesting is how the highschoolers questioned hanging around with our prodigy. But especially the battle and how it goes from the Cures -especially the highschoolers- shouldering the weight of it all à la Atlas... to a succession of left and right hooks so powerful and so impressive that a Smashing Pumpkins pun was definitely mandatory. #AoiApproved reference!
Also, the Proust moment. THE PROUST MOMENT. Most people who have seen Ratatouille don't recognise the same memory-triggering flavour experience as a literary allusion. To one of the most iconic opening scenes in French literary history:

Next time, we get the pet-centric episode... Pekorin finally becomes human, though she's only a toddler (obviously), and the Cures have to sit her. Hope something more interesting happens across enemy lines, since Glaive has practically drained Diaval like a shot of dark werewolf liquor... Elysio has a reason to worry, definitely... is there some struggle for power, and will it come through after the introduction of human Pekorin?

IN NEXT EPISODE (38):

The spotlight falls on Pekorin; we see new plots unfurl
as our team pet becomes a most adorable li'l girl...

The Cures will have to sit her for a while, but what's exciting
is how this subplot on Glaive's power-up will uplift the fighting...
