PLOT TWISTS IN OTHELLO

5 Plot Twists In Bell Shakespeare's Othello
'Othello' is a violent exploration of love and jealousy, and what separates it. It's one of Shakespeare's most famous tragedies; a gripping production that will attempt to deeply connect with audience members when Bell Shakespeare presents it across Queensland and New South Wales.

Edmund Lembke-Hogan, who plays Roderigo in the production, has put together a list of plot twists in the show. Look away now if you're not into spoilers.

The Turkish fleet is destroyed

We are whisked to Cyprus where the mightiest of storms has dashed the entire Turkish fleet to pieces, while conveniently delivering our characters to shore. On an island. With no war to fight. Celebrated with a big party. Opportunity is ripe for Iago, and Shakespeare has set the stage for one of the greatest psychological thrillers of all time.

Cassio is demoted

With the war out of the way, Iago can get back to work. Having plied Cassio with drink, he convinces the love-sick Roderigo to pick a fight with him. Cassio takes the bait and something of a riot ensues. The old alarum (Shakespeare for alarm) bell kicks off, Cassio manages to stab a noble of Cyprus, and Othello is forced to demote him. Iago persuades Cassio to seek Desdemona’s help getting his job back. After all, “Our general’s wife is now the general.” Desperate, Cassio takes the advice and the tragic web starts to spin.

Emilia gives Iago the handkerchief

A handkerchief. It all comes down to a handkerchief. Iago’s poison is starting to work on Othello. Desdemona has taken up Cassio’s cause and Othello is seeing Cassio’s kisses on her lips. Desdemona happens to let her handkerchief slip while wiping Othello’s brow and Emilia picks it up. Her wayward husband Iago has been begging her to steal it and she, not without some misgiving, gives it to him. Iago plants the handkerchief in Cassio’s lodging and it becomes the evidence that convinces Othello to kill Desdemona.

Iago underestimates Emilia

Having manufactured the death of Roderigo and wounding of Cassio, Iago sends Emilia to Othello and Desdemona’s chamber to report. Perhaps this is a mistake, or perhaps Iago wants someone to discover the murder, but either way it’s his undoing. As the horrified group look over Desdemona’s body, Othello reveals it was Cassio having the handkerchief that convinced him of Desdemona’s infidelity. Emilia outs her husband. Incensed, Iago kills her before fleeing the room. Subsequently captured, Iago ends the play promised imminent and prolonged torture, but the only lead player still alive.

AUGUST KKPCÀLM EPISODES

Natsu da! Umi da! KiraPati Hyōryūki!
夏だ! 海だ! キラパティ漂流記!Summer! Ocean! The KiraPâti's Drifting Story!

(Or: What is a bloody ICE CAVE doing in the South Pacific? Also: Bilberry, like Shut, gets the Tyrion Lannister treatment.)

Atsu~i LIVE BATTLE! Aoi VS Misaki!
アツ~いライブバトル!あおいVSミサキ!Blazing Live Battle! Aoi vs. Misaki!!

(AOI VS MISAKI!? That sounds like an interesting hot-blooded sing-off worthy of a second musical review, with the wannabe facing off her akogare... does anyone else suspect that the vocalist of Ganache becomes the victim of the week du jour? And will it be a mano a mano or a pulling-out-all-the-stops Wild Azüre vs. Ganache confrontation?)

Dai PINCH! Yami ni Somatta CURE MACARON!
大ピンチ!闇に染まったキュアマカロン!Great Distress! Cure Macaron Stained in Darkness!

(This title instantly caught my eye; even more given the fact that I am writing a Snow Queen AU with a Yukakira bent. Now I wonder whether this will be a real threat or a fifth-column ruse to close in on the Noirs... or a a fifth-column ruse to close in on the Noirs gone wrong when she is forced to the dark side...)

FRÈRE CONTRE SOEUR

Kirakira Pretty Cure à la Mode - episode 22
My Own Review
FRÈRE CONTRE SOEUR

PREVIOUSLY ON Kirakira Pretty Cure à la Mode:

Right then, a stride among the flowers that makes them wilt, a stripling with eyes glowing ruby red, a sharper, blood-red dagger in his right hand...

GIULIO: You are all here. How convenient for me...

As he closes in, those glowing red orbs are revealed to be Empty Eyes, a tell-tale sign of mind control/brainwashing/emotional manipulation.

GIULIO!!!

Standing before Kirarin, he immediately makes her sixth sense tingle...

KIRARIN (in shock): This sensation... Could it be...?!

GIULIO: Everyone... I will defeat you all. Precures...

GIULIO: FIGHT ME!!!

Of course our Precures attack one by one, the secondary-schoolers first ... but I, as always, have decided to showcase the 'Zuka-inspired ones:

MACARON JULIENNE!!

CHOCOLAT AROMASE!!

However, as usual in arc finales, these attacks are a no sell to the enemy.

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
The middle part of this trilogy of the summer finale is still riveting, with both the action scenes and the revealing backstory flashbacks, and I am hanging on the edge of my seat as I eagerly await its conclusion in next week.
The relationship between Ciel/Kirarin and Pikalio/Giulio was so reminiscent of Gerda and Kai --only that here the two youngsters sharing practically everything, the male half of whom is corrupted, are siblings by blood rather than by friendship--, and the parallel mirrored (never better said) in the leitmotifs of their reflections in one another's eyes, is brilliant. The way they took and adapted this fairytale motif as the basis of their character arcs could never have been bettered.
Seriously, all this start of darkness (Giulio's) for taking some criticism too seriously? Well, then it is equally Ciel's and Giulio's fault: hers for being too proud and too much of a perfectionist; and his due to his sensitivity, defeatism, and inferiority complex... and Master Noir took advantage of that divide between the siblings. Think the Baratheon brother feud without its tragic closure, with Stannis and Renly realising that they were both too stubborn and that the other one could actually be right. Or the sibling rivalry in Frozen, in a certain sense. All that Pikalio/Giulio ever wanted was his overachieving older sister's approval. I love how this redemption and reconciliation were played out... but the story suddenly takes another cliffhanger U turn with Noir locking Ciel/Kirarin as his next target, and Pikalio as the one to save her. Kind of like the Kanata/Towa dynamics in Go!Princess; in both cases, the younger sibling was preyed upon by the dark side, and, after their heel-face turn, the enemy goes for the elder sibling, whom the younger has to save...
As for the new Finishing Move and the goddess in the opening credits appearing right out of the blue, I didn't expect that Spanish Inquisition, thinking of this Finishing Move change more as something for the third part of the finale. The shrine to the goddess/queen in the cave in Mt. Ichigo was kind of maybe the reason for a yousei community to exist there, and I think it will play a key part in next episode.

IN NEXT EPISODE (23):

Now, having lost Pikalio, Master Noir turns to his twin;
he's set his sights on Ciel's heart, and it appears he will win!

Those Empty Eyes show that now it's her brother's turn to save her,
while she will face her greatest trial, and Noir will regret to brave her!!

BILBERRY: And what about me?! Don't I get a say, or at least five minutes of screentime!?
