IN WHICH A BIG BLUE BRUTE IS BACK TO BASH

Star*Twinkle Pretty Cure - Episode 32
My Own Review

IN WHICH A BIG BLUE BRUTE IS BACK TO BASH

PreCures may have achieved one of their objectives, but it turns out that is only the first step in their mission. In the thirty-second episode, they discover what comes next.

Yuni takes it easy whilst the others fuss over Fuwa

Now that PreCures have gathered all twelve Princess Star Colour Pens and Fuwa has transformed, the Star Princesses give them their next mission: to find some MacGuffin called the Twinkle Imagination. A fight with a powerful adversary also leads to a new finishing technique.

Garuogre isn’t exactly the sharpest tool in the shed (unsurprising for the Brute among the cadres)

Garuogre returns for a rematch in this episode, though not before grabbing Fuwa. Fortunately for PreCures, he (as the Brute of the KnotRaiders that he is) doesn’t recognise Fuwa in her new alicorn form and just throws away the opportunity to capture her.

PreCures vs. Garuogre

The main event in this episode is the fight between PreCures and Garuogre. Our Big Blue Brute isn’t exactly happy about what happened previously, so he uses the second chance that Darknest has granted him.

Those who had lost everything

Garuouga has a few choice words to say about PreCures’ desire to protect Fuwa, which gives us a bit of insight on the KNotraiders. Much like Yuni, it seems that Garuogre, Kappard, and Tenjou (and most surely Ayewan) had all lost their planets. When they were lost, Darknest appeared. The flashback to that event implies that some darkness drove them from their homes – and to that, I ask: is Darknest that darkness, or is there some other malevolent force out there?

Cure Star lands a solid hit

The battle banter is pretty typical PreCure stuff: Garuogre convinced that protecting something makes them weak, whilst PreCures are strong because they have something to protect. At least the fight is fun to watch, though – the ogre has a pretty good track record for his fights so far (all two of them).

Pretty Cure Star Twinkle Imagination

Garuogre is a tough opponent, but all PreCures and Fuwa putting their feelings together results in a new finishing move: Pretty Cure Star Twinkle Imagination. PreCures get some new outfits for the attack, and Fuwa participates as well.

Perhaps the first time that PreCures have seen Darknest

If I’m remembering correctly, PreCures also get their first sighting of Darknest in this episode. He calls Fuwa a “vessel”.

The Star Princesses give PreCures their next objective

One more impromptu trip to the Star Palace gives PreCures their next objective: to gather Twinkle Imagination. That’s all they have to say on the matter, though: it is up to Cure Star and the others to seek it out themselves.
This episode of Star ☆ Twinkle was a good one. The fight against Garuogre was decent, we got to learn a little more about the KNotraiders, and PreCures have powered up. Good stuff.
Next time, the quest to gather Twinkle Imagination begins! Or at least it would, it everyone wasn’t so busy…

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
ALL STAR PRINCESSES TOGETHER NOW!! Hadn't seen that since the springtime of this year, when Star*Twinkle began. WUUUIIII!!! >D OwO
Fuwicorn: so, as we mentioned in last episode Fuwa evolved from jigglypuff to... alicorn? Maybe this is some brony bait, intentional or not, ... GARUOGRE, the Brute as he is, failed utterly to recognise an evolved Fuwa ( XD )
The conflict thickens:
KNotraider cadre backstory::: so Darknest created this black hole that swallowed up Planet Kappa, Planet Tengu, Planet Cyclops, and Planet Ogre, leaving a sole survivor from each world on purpose, so that, racked with trauma, survivor guilt, and lack of a purpose in life... they had no choice but to join the Ophiuchus Star Prince as his closest warriors, as soon as he coaxed them into him.
Is Fuwa a vessel... for what? Namely, His Overlordship's words
The Star Princesses have another quest: The Twinkle Imagination? (heheheheh...) Do these Japanese anime-makers have any idea of the innuendo the word "twinkle" carries in its native English? (I mean, to put another example, Mandibuzz's original name is Vulgina, which officially stands for "vulture regina", but the appearance of that pokémon does give off some unfortunate innuendo as well).

IN WHICH WE GET TO MEET THE OTHER DAVE

Star*Twinkle Pretty Cure
Episode 12 - My Own Review
IN WHICH WE GET TO MEET THE OTHER DAVE

In the twelfth episode of Star ☆ Twinkle, the girls make a movie. They also face the prospect of having to say farewell to Lala.

A renowned and familiar Hollywood director - what is he doing in a hinterland podunk far in East Asia like Mihoshi (the quaintest community of adventure in this series since Ichigozaka)?
TOKUSATSU!! (ie special effects)

This episode picks up directly from where the previous one left off, with Madoka’s father Fuyuki discovering the girls at the scene of another UFO sighting. However, someone appears and claims that everything he has seen is movie magic – Hikaru recognises the person as a renowned Hollywood film director.
Hikaru claims that she and the other girls will be starring in a film. Not quite what the filmmaker had planned, but receiving permission from the Prime Minister to film doesn’t really leave him with much choice.

Episode 12 continue from where we left off when a mysterious man with a camera appeared and he happened to be a movie director from Hollywood, California (or was he?). He managed to trick Mr. Kaguya that all the happenings were special effects but Hikaru makes matter worse by saying they were helping the crew in making a movie in Japan.

The director is actually an alien; a Miniaturian
The director goes to Lala’s starship, where they talk. He reveals himself to actually be a Miniaturian, and the film director disguise, a lifesize droid human suit just like in Meet Dave, pretty much arose from an obsession with Hollywood. He quickly turns his attention to Lala, Fuwa, and Purunce, though, telling them that they have violated space laws by letting themselves be known on Earth. The punishment for that is being sent back to their native world.

Hikaru asks the director to overlook the aliens being on Earth if the film does well
There’s still the small matter of the film that the director will be shooting, and Hikaru immediately latches on to that. They’ll give the filmmaker the performance he wants, and if the film does well enough he’ll overlook Lala, Fuwa, and Purunce being on Earth.

Meanwhile at the Knotraiders'...

Ever the doubting tomcat... what is he really up to at the end of the day?

Meanwhile on Earth...
Hikaru Hoshina as kunoichi (ie female ninja) Hoshikage
Lala as heavenly maiden (apsara)
Elena Amamiya as the Solar Prince (¡¡EL PRÍNCIPE SOL!! ¿O es Mors Martell?)
Madoka Kaguya as her namesake the Moon Princess
Hikaru, Lala, Elena, and Madoka get prepared (and in costume), and this filming for The Legend of the Feather Raiment (Hagoromo) Episode One: Ninja-Yókai Space Wars: The Movie begins. It does not go well.
Hikaru’s delivery is flat, Lala’s nerves get the better of her, and Madoka ends up reciting the whole script, rather than just her own lines. Elena is the only one who manages to give an actually decent performance.
Hikaru and Lala, ready for the final scene of the film
Moving on, the time comes to film the final scene. In the scene, the heavenly maiden dons the raiment and returns to space, with the others saying farewell. The director calls it the most important scene in the film, and practically begs the girls to stick to the script.

This "filmmaker" was revealed to be an alien and a representative of the Galaxy Union. Lala will be repatriated due to her involvement with Hikaru and company. But now he has to make a movie in order to continue the charades. There were some funny moments during the shoot but of course, when Lala's character was supposed to return to the stars, Hikaru actually ad-lib her lines and said her true feelings of not waiting Lala to leave Earth which I got a feeling it is going foreshadowing in the season finale.

Still, the director was touched by her lines and used it in the film.

Hikaru and Lala stray from the script, delivering an even more emotional scene
Hikaru just can’t bring herself to say goodbye to Lala, and says that she wants to be with her forever. Lala feels the same way, and the exchange between the pair brings Fuwa, Purunce, and even the Miniaturian to tears. The crew ask if they should cut, but the director insists that they keep filming.

Unfortunately, that scene ends up getting cut short as the girls’ duty as PreCures calls.

Oh yes, the girls also battle Aiwan after she turned the filmmaker into a 'trigger.

Ayewan has arrived on Earth, and she uses a powered up Dark Pen to turn the not-quite-human filmmaker into a knottrigger. Thus, the others transform, but quickly discover that their foe is even more powerful than the ones they have fought before.

PreCures show their foes the endgame
Cure Star, Milkyway, Soleil, and Selene end up getting captured, and Ayewan implies that making films is pointless. It is Purunce that gives PreCures the strength to fight back, stating that their emotions are real, and the friendship touched everyone’s hearts. PreCures break free, and are able to defeat their foe.

Hikaru suggests an Earth surname for Lala: Lala Hagoromo
After the battle, the girls apologise for running off when they did. It seems like Lala will be forced to return to her home planet after all, but the director had a change of heart after witnessing Hikaru and Lala’s emotional performance. He does tell Lala that she will
need a surname from the planet she is staying on, though. (On Lala's homeworld, there are no surnames and everyone has only got a single short name!)

Hikaru suggests she goes with Lala Hagoromo – after all, "Hagoromo" (羽衣, ie "Feather Raiment") was the name of the raiment worn by the character Lala played during their film. Lala loves it, and we end on a fairly happy note.

After the battle, the filmmaker decided to let Lala stay on Earth and she was given a family name- Lala Hagoromo and she want to go to school!

This episode of Star ☆ Twinkle was a very good one. Overall it was just fun to watch. Naturally, the highlight of this episode has to be Hikaru and Lala saying that they want to be with each other forever. A scene that touched the hearts of everyone who was watching, and was a much better way for the film to end than what the script said.
Though it does leave me wondering if we’ll end up seeing another similar scene towards the end of this season – the Pretty Cure series sure does seem to love having two characters from different worlds (or times, or whatever) departing with some very emotional scenes.
I guess that’s something to worry about when the end of the season comes; we are still a long way off of that at the moment.
This was a wonderful episode, and I’m happy to see Hikaru and Lala’s bond become even stronger. Next time, Lala goes to school.
This was one of the few episodes that was a very well thought out fluff episode, and an entertaining one at that! In order to cover up the truth behind the battle between the knotraiders, we have an alien agent from Galactic Starscape Alliance disguised as a Human claim all of what had happened part of his special effects for his film! The whole thing is was such a stretch, I loved how the writer even had the characters acknowledge how much of a stretch their stories were! But as crazy as it was, they needed something to throw Mr. Kaguya and his team off-track, especially since it’s so important to Galactic Starscape Alliance’s to keep aliens a secret from Humanity.
Hilariously, the agent finds himself forced to produce something after Hikaru takes the story a step further by insisting they were his actresses for his movie. And boy, did she underestimate how difficult it would be to act. Elena was the only one who could put on a decent performance, Madoka (adorably) read the script word-by-word and Lala and Hikaru were monotone actors, it was golden!
Additionally, the girls were under pressure to make his film a success because Lala had been caught for breaking the law, and was due to be sent back to her home planet. Luckily through the power of friendship, they were able to touch his heart and be given an exception.
As fluffy and fun as the episode was, it was great to see they didn’t waste any time with the enemy already making adjustments to the girls’ power-up. Now that the master is awake, he is hungry for their power! I greatly appreciated that we got to see him provide his generals a permanent buffed up to their weapons to better equip them for their fights against the precure. I also especially liked the fact even though Ayewon had the enhanced dark pen (which they added a nice highlight to), the girls did not luck out and recover it as they had for other pens.
However during the scene which the Master provided the weapon upgrade, seeing Bakenyan’s uneasy expression gave me a sudden realization that he might actually be an undercover agent of the Galactic Starscape Alliance! And if it proves to be true, then it makes this episode all the more important, because this is the first time we are actually seeing the Galactic Starscape Alliance we have heard so much about from Lala, in action!
Next week, it looks like more fluff on the way with Lala abiding to the agent’s condition that she must blend into human society as he had. She will be be enrolling at the academy with the girls, getting to experience Earth’s school-life. But it looks like it might be a tricky transition, as this episode established that while Lala has been blessed to be able to converse with humans, she still cannot read their language and needs her AI to help interpret that for her (maybe she'll need a portable interpretation device like a Babel Fish?). So I’m looking forward to see how she will adjust and adapt to the new setting!
MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
So this wound up being a Lala focus episode, instead of the Elena focus episode we were hoping for, but still seeing the Cures in fantasy costumes was the icing on the cake... What came completely out of left field was the fact that the filmmaker was a walking talking reference to Meet Dave, hinting at a possible inspiration for his idea of making a lifesized earthling suit... It showed how Lala wanted to stay on Earth with her earthly friends (nakama) and Hikaru's speech to her is probably the emotional so far despite being a movie. But I am pretty sure when the time come, Lala will find it difficult to bade farewell to her nakama.
A few words on the hagoromo tale (on the feather raiment, ie the shawl, of the apsara): This is the Asian version of the swan maiden taleThe folktales usually adhere to the following basic plot (type 400). A young, unmarried man steals a magic shawl or pair of wings made of swan feathers from a swan maiden so that she will not fly away and remain in humanoid form, and marries her. Years later, she yearns for the freedom of her avian life, growing increasingly melancholic upon watching the swans migrate. The swan maiden immediately gets her robe or wings and disappears to where she came from. Taking French leave. If the husband is able to find her again, it is an arduous quest, and often the impossibility is clear enough so that he does not even try. In the Japanese version, heavily influenced by the original myth of Urvashi, the maiden, just like Urvashi, is an apsara, known in Japanese as tennyo (天女, literally "heavenly female"), and the garment she uses to shift between avian and humanoid forms is a hagoromo (羽衣), literally "feather raiment". Voilà from whence the premise for the film and Lala's Earthly surname come!
The Aries Pen of Chekhov: As predicted, the 'trigger du jour was made out of the filmmaker and using a pen we didn't see to get used purified and its princess freed... looks like Ayewan has improved her original recipe so that her dark pens can be used more than once -- but then, how many times? Twice, thrice, four times...? Four means death, so, until the real number of uses is revealed, why not stick to that headcanon?
The Costumes for the Cures: WAOUW! For starters: Seeing Madoka Kaguya as Princess Kaguya (of course, with that surname and lunar theme, the part was written for her, wasn't it?) gave us an even more redoubtable lunar royal than Minami Kaido playing the same part.
Elena roba la actuación: ¡¡EL PRÍNCIPE SOL!! ¡¡EL PRÍNCIPE SOL!! (añadir referencias a Mors Martell)
The Cat in the Spats Won't Have Any of That: Bakenyan is still the doubting thomas... or rather we say the doubting tomcat when it comes to Lord-Lady Darknest's cadre power-ups. Definitely a sign that he's up to something... either an agent from interstellar law enforcement, like the filmmaker, or maybe he's up to his own agenda, as kitties tend to be so spirited (living at mum's with a dozen of them has taught me that)...

IN NEXT EPISODE (13):

Lala starts school at Mihoshi Secondary (doesn't the uniform match her hair and eyes?)!!

IN WHICH THE CAT IN THE SPATS WILL HAVE NONE OF THAT

Star*Twinkle Pretty Cure - Episode 11
My Own Review
IN WHICH THE CAT IN THE SPATS WILL HAVE NONE OF THAT

This is my review of Star Twinkle Ep 11 and what happened after the girls' first major defeat?

Safe to say that things really did not go well for PreCures in the previous episode of Star ☆ Twinkle. Perhaps things will improve for them in the eleventh episode.

Everyone examines the damage that was done to Lala’s wreck

We start with PreCures crashing back to Earth on Lala’s burning starship. It ends up getting damaged, though it is still somewhat functional this time around. Enough for it to be stored in a pea-sized spherical capsule, like something straight out of Dragon Ball.

After their spaceship suffered damages from the crash land, Madoka's father Fuyuki Kaguya and his men were heading towards the landing site and Lala turned the spaceship into a mini portal ball and they began to run away from the scene. (Though why Lala never thought of making the spaceship portable in the first place is anyone question)

With Madoka’s dad nearby investigating reported UFO sightings, everyone makes a run for it before they can be spotted. They hide out at Ryotaro’s observatory.

Ryo is surprised to see Fuwa and Purunce when the girls come rushing in. However, he keeps quiet about them, even when Madoka’s father comes in.
The girls arrived at Ryotarou's observatory and he was shocked to see Fuwa and Purunce. However Mr. Kaguya has arrived and the girls hide in the next room. Ryoutarou played dumb and Mr. Kaguya was distracted by his men although he noticed the dirt on the floor. Ryoutarou learnt the true identities of Lala and agreed to keep it a secret.
Fortunately, something comes up that distracts him from actually discovering that Madoka and her friends are there.
Whenever Hikaru is feeling down, she visits the planetarium. Ryotaro finds her in there, and talks to her. Hikaru blames herself for what happened, but Ryo thinks otherwise. He also tells Hikaru that the Southern Cross constellation suits her clique.

Hikaru blames herself for what happened

This is where we see Hikaru all down inside the auditorium. Ryoutarou explained that the Southern Cross or Cruconstellation (also known as the Emu or the Rhea) is not just a guide for travellers but it also holds the endless possibilities for those who seek the unknown.

Meanwhile, the KnotRaiders arrived on Earth and Ayewan suggested using the Taurus pen to make them become a KnotTrigger. Bakenyan actually declined the offer which suggested two things: -he is actually very strong and overwhelms the other three generals or he has a hidden secret that might be connected to the revival of the big bad-Darknest who is also to awaken in this episode.

A cycloppatengu knottrigger created by combining Kappard, Tenjou and Ayewan’s powers
The knotraiders arrive on Earth, and Ayewan has an experiment she wants to take care of. She turns the Taurus Princess Star Colour Pen into a Dark Pen, and uses that power to turn herself, Kappard and Tenjou into a knottrigger. Bakenyan, Ayewan’s butler, refuses to be a part of that.

The knottrigger attacks Madoka’s father, since he happens to be nearby. He ends up getting knocked unconscious, but Purunce is able to carry him to safety whilst PreCures transform and fight. (Since Fuyuki is unconscious, eyes shut, he doesn't know he's been saved by one of the aliens he's out to capture!)

The Three Generals become a KnotTrigger and Mr. Kaguya was knocked unconscious by it (fortunately, since a space cephalopod was the one who took him to a safe neck of the woods, far from the frontline).

The girls arrived to battle but were no match against the generals. They even taunted Cure Star for being naive about the galaxy...

However, the knottrigger overwhelms them.

Kappard, Tenjou, and Ayewan all start going on about how they lost their home planets and had to live on the edge of the universe, since the three generals have lost everything and have no choice but to serve Darknest.
They tell Cure Star that she has no imagination.

So, their combined form would be... a cycloppatengu, right?

Soleil, Milkyway, and Selene offer Cure Star their support
It seems that Cure Star has nothing to say back to her enemy’s taunt, but the other three members or PreCures stand up and say how it is thanks to Hikaru’s imagination that they are all together now. Cure Star also realises just what Ryotaro was talking about when he said that the Southern Cross suited all of them perfectly.

However the other three Cures told Cure Star that it was her and her "Imagination" that brought them together and learn the value of friendship.

Cure Star is able to regain her resolves thanks to her friends, and this in turn awakens a new power. When said power is awoken, Darknest – presumably our main antagonist for this season – reacts to it.

Cure Star joined with the others and their combined powers awaken their new power-Twinkle Sticks and the Team Attack-Southern Cross Shot which defeated the three generals.

Southern Cross Shot

With new power comes a new attack: the Southern Cross Shot (AKA the de rigueur cour finale finishing move upgrade).

The Trigger has not even got enough time to brace for impact...

They defeat the knottrigger with the attack, and Cure Star is able to reclaim (and purified with just touching it) her Taurus Princess Star Colour Pen.

Bakenyan retreats with his defeated allies and the Dark Pen of Aries
Purunce tells Cure Star to grab the Aries Dark Pen that the enemy claimed before, but Bakenyan steps up and refuses to let them have it. He claims that whoever gathers all twelve Pens (btw, thirteenth, Ophiuchus, is there?) will gain the power to transcend anything before departing. Exit all four knotraider cadres, stage left.

Cure Star got back her Taurus pen but Bakenyan retrieved the other (Aries) pen, darkened in the previous episode, and the generals. Before he leaves, he told the girls that those who have all twelve pens will control the universe. (Sounds like the Infinity Gauntlet all over again)
Mr. Kaguya arrived to see Madoka and her friends and was about to probe them when an unknown person with a camera arrived...
Once Bakenyan is gone, Madoka’s father shows up (Fuyuki had come to in the meantime, after Purunce left for the frontline). Before he can get too suspicious about Madoka turning up in a place where a UFO was sighted, somebody who looks rather familiar to any film buffs out there approaches them. Got to wait until the next episode to find out just who, what, and why it is, though.
Episodes 10 and 11 of Star ☆ Twinkle were both excellent. They come as a pair, and we got some really neat moments from both. Episode 10 most notably gave us the enemies winning, and in this one PreCures gained a new team attack (as de rigueur when it comes to finishing moves in every cour finale). Milkyway, Soleil, and Selene all coming together and pulling Cure Star back from the brink of despair was also a particularly good moment.
We’ve also had some intrigue set up; the power that PreCures used for their Southern Cross Shot caused Darknest, the knotraiders' overlords to react to it.
There’s also the small matter of the owner of all twelve Princess Star Colour Pens being able to transcend anything, That’s some pretty major power there, no wonder the knotraiders are keen to get their hands on the Pens.
So yeah, I really enjoyed this episode of Star ☆ Twinkle (and the previous one). I’m also quite looking forward to the next episode, mostly to see an Elena focus episode and Elena as the next Captain Marvel...

This episode is very personal to Hikaru as she learns about her mistakes and she nearly loses her "Imagination" since the three generals overwhelm them. But thanks to her friends-nakama, (Which is a common trope in magical girl warrior series) she believed in herself again and their bond actually create their new power up-the Twinkle Sticks! Similar to last season, we had yet to see how individual stick will work with each Cure but the team attack was pretty nice although I felt there was no finishing pose from the girls after the cleansing but it is still early since we have not even reach the middle of the season.

Following up from last week’s epic episode, the girls continued to run into all sorts of problems! Their starship s damaged, but luckily it can still shrink into “carry-mode” (thank god for that be functioning!) so it wouldn’t be found, Madoka’s father is as intelligent as he depicted to be, and was hot on the girls heels. Poor Ryo had tried to cover for them, but their muddy tracks gave them away. Had it not been for Fuyuki Kaguya’s colleague to draw his attention elsewhere (most likely due to the arrival of the Knotraiders), they would have surely been caught!
Upon their return, Hikaru was understandably out of the sorts, consumed by her guilt of letting her friends down and causing problems because of her own selfish desires. So I liked that she sought alone time so she could reflect on her mistakes. I think it was more important for Hikaru’s character to come to understand her mistakes on her own. In fact, I enjoyed seeing this more grounded side of her character. It really helps bring some balance to her energetic character. I also liked her conversation with Ryo, it touched my heart!
The three generals also almost made Hikaru lose faith in herself when they tried to make her believe she didn’t have any imagination at all, (which as we all know, couldn’t be further from the truth). The other girls however gave her some words of encouragement, of how her overflowing creativity and ability to imagination all sorts of things has helped them. But what I loved the most about this scene was Hikaru’s tearful response. It showed how much their words meant to her.
Although the girls’ power-up wasn’t necessarily as “dramatic” or “flashy” as some have been the past, I liked the simplicity behind it. Their new power came out of the girls’ strengthening their individual resolves: For Hikaru it’s for Earth and the Stars, for Lala it’s being a Precure, Madoka’s was determination, and Elena’s was protecting smiles. And I don’t know about you though, but when they prepared to use the power of their new Finishing Move, I was half expecting them to break into a song! Thank god they didn’t! Southern Cross Shot is spectacular and gorgeous, and I love that it’s used for their power because of the sentimental meaning behind it.
But what I loved the most about this event was a reality-check for all the whole team. For the first time, they had got a taste of defeat, and just how powerful the knotraiders can be both individually and when they work together as a unit. They were also given a harrowing reminder of what the Knotraiders are known for: Raiding planets. They're an empire of conquistadors! The girls were all horrified to learn the knotraiders have their eyes set on Earth potentially being their next target. Additionally, they have also learned through Butler Bakenyan, whoever holds the power of all twelve pens, will have the power to exceed all things, which makes it all the more important to keep it out of the enemy’s hands.
So it was no surprise to see even though the girls were able to defeat the three generals (thanks to their new power: Twinkle Sticks) and successfully retrieve the Taurus Pen, there was little reason to celebrate. In fact I would say this fight really ended more like a draw, since the girls were not able to retrieve the pen that the generals had claimed on the other planet. Unfortunately, the tension of Madoka’s father confronting the girls (having realized they have always been in the area they were told to investigate) was broken upon the arrival of some film director (who is apparently an alien).
As for the first cadre fight, this probably has to be my favourite battle in the recent years. Not only the fight was thrilling to watch (poor Fuyuki Kaguya though! He got hit quite bad!), but I also a huge fan with how they made the generals team up together to take the girls down. Although Kappard and Tenjou were initially against the idea, once they used the dark pen to combine their powers, they cooperated with each other without any fuss. It was great to see what they are capable of when they decide to work together, making it a fantastic way to follow up their first fight, especially since their “Master’s Blessing” had expired.
Another detail I enjoyed was what happened after the trio lost. Just as the girls were about to reclaim the pen that had been taken from the other planet, Bakenyan makes himself relevant and successfully retreats with the corrupted pen and the generals in tow. In fact, speaking of Bakenyan, I am quite curious about what he meant by “my power won’t be balanced” when combined with the generals’. I am going to assume this guy is actually incredibly strong, and might be the Master’s eyes and ears, the Overlord's Varys so to speak, since as he observed the Cures awaken the Star Cross power, the Master woke up. I am so intrigued by this development!
Lastly, let’s take a moment to talk about what we learned from the generals this week! They spoke about how others never thought about how they felt, being forced to lurk in the cold and darkest side of the universe, or how (at least) Kappard’s planet have been stolen from him, and so in turn he must steal from others. Now that we know this, it explains so much why Kappard describes Earth to be the ‘coziest’ one of them all, why others’ love for space sickens him.
Next week, it looks like the girls are going to be given a “breather” of a sorts, but it also looks like they may be facing the enemy while they are buffed up again. Given that they now received their first power up, it only makes sense for the knotraiders to continue adjusting their strategies in order to keep up with the girls, especially if they intend to face them on their own from time to time.

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION...

FUYUKI!!! To be honest, this is the closest a magical girl warrior series has ever got to shooting Tywin on the loo. Although, of course, being a genre more idealistic than cynical, he gets better (Fuyuki Kaguya, of course, NOT Tywin Lannister!). Though he was only knocked out -- not becoming the victim of the week, since there are none in cour finale episodes like this! Though I can predict that he will become the victim of the week in some Madoka focus episode, right?

Ryoutaro sheltering the Cures: To be honest - this feels just like the scenario of hiding fugitives away (Jews or Gays from the Nazis, Valjean from Javert, Batman from the Gotham Mafia... not to mention the Baudelaires from both the law and the troupe after fleeing the Vile Village) that we've encountered in fiction before.
Ryou is not only Santa and Dumbledore - but also Monsignor Myriel!

The Cat in the Spats shows some genre-savviness: How does he know that so many cadres across continuities, when they become one-winged angels, are sitting ducks for purification and the ensuing heel-face turn? That was the reason why he declined the strategy du jour! Now he has gone from a satellite character with faaar less center-stage than Batman's Pennyworth to the savvy fricking third-in-command for the KnotRaiders...

Some knotraider backstory revealed! Building upon Kappard's You-Know-Nothing-of-Javert moment about hostile climates on other worlds, all three cadres now follow upon that rant with a similar one on how their respective homeworlds were conquered and they were forced to flee; in other words, there is a planet of kappa, as well as a planet of tengu, a planet of cyclops, and a planet of catfolk... under knotraider occupation! Surely, if this theory is right, the cadres-generals had no choice but to join the ranks of their oppressors, even if it meant being proscribed and seen by their own kin as traitors... If our own Earth is a paradise compared to those space warzones (and, given my escapist and chipper Volunteers-Fighting-Disease mindset, I know this little blue dot is frigged up)...

On the Pen front: The wrested Taurus Pen has been reclaimed! It's so obvious that we still keep on thinking of that - but what about the Aries Pen teased in last zenpen episode? The knotraiders still have it poisoned and in their power; looks like a loaded Chekhov's gun to fire sooner or later, right?

What happens to a free Star Princess once her pen is darkened? - She does not disappear, but suffers a a seizure with intense stabbing chest pain and loss of consciousness, just like a heart condition. Just what the Taurus Princess goes through today.

As I said before, Bakenyan is now the most interesting character since he rarely take any action but he is the most calm and perhaps the most dangerous. (It is always the quiet ones you have to be careful) Furthermore, Darknest was awaken by Cures' new power and the idea of gathering the Princess Pens for the ultimate power is nothing special since it has been done to death by previous seasons.

The knotraiders' overlord awakens: thanks to the de rigueur Finishing Move Upgrade, no less!

Overall, a great follow up from last week's episode but now who is this fat man with the camera that approached the girls? However the preview for next week episode spoils it as it is a familiar-looking sci-fi Film Director/Filmmaker and he wants Lala to be the lead for his apsara-themed next film! Until then, see you in the next post!

IN NEXT EPISODE (12):

Steven himself comes to Mihoshi town to shoot some Spiel-film!

And he's got his sights set on Elena to become part of the decade's superhero film boom (the next Captain Marvel, anyone?) Plus - Lala gets to play an apsara... does this sound enticing?
