SPOT / STOP THE IMPOSTOR

Kirakira Precure à la Mode - Episode 41
My Own Review
SPOT/STOP THE IMPOSTOR

Few people are happy to see Giulio.
That deadpan of Bilberry's is precious.

Though his twin sister is elated!!
No matter if Giulio is more of an introvert and Ciel's effusiveness makes him wince.

A sinister Giulio impersonator storms around Ichigozaka, stealing kirakiraru.
(You can tell it's the impostor because he wears black and Prussian blue, and conceals his face).

Ciel defends her fraternal twin Giulio, now the second garçon at the KiraPâti, from angry customers who accuse him of ruining their sweets.

With the people blaming Pikalio for ruining their sweets and accusing him of being the one responsible for summoning the monsters that have been attacking lately, Bilberry decides to make herself scarce. She’d rather not have anyone finding about what she did before.
She goes to the KiraPâti, where she tells them what has happened.

Akira and Yukari quickly figure out that something strange is going on
The KiraPâti girls manage to catch up to Ciel, and see her telling the people to give her a chance to talk to her brother. She does that, whilst the secondary-schoolers hase after her. Yukari and Akira realise something is up, and they decide to investigate.
After that we get more Giulio angst, as he goes on about how the trouble he caused in the past won’t just go away. He runs off somewhere, and Himari asks Pekorin to keep an eye on him.
After that, the girls go back to their KiraPâti, where the Elder encourages Ciel to make some Liège waffles. For auld lang syne.

Pekorin arrives after Ciel finishes making the waffles, and says that Pikalio is going to leave Ichigozaka.
Elsewhere, we see that Yukari and Akira’s investigation has turned up a lead.
Chocolat and Macaron catch up with the fake Pikalio
The Giulio/Pikalio that had been running around town stealing kirakiraru was actually a mook soldier.
A regular rank-and-file private mook. Coup de théâtre! I was actually expecting the impostor to be Elysio himself...

Elysio appears before the others. Ciel goes on ahead to catch up to Giulio, leaving the other three secondary-schoolers to confront him.
Elysio ready for battle
Whilst the other tweens fight Elysio, Ciel catches up to Pikalio. The two of them talk, leading to the resolution of their situation with some fluffy, heartwarming sibling bonding.
Awww...
The battle against Elysio doesn’t go so well, with the arrival of Macaron and Chocolat not really helping (to our bitter disappointment!). No, the battle’s tide can’t change until Ciel arrives.

Cure Parfait
The battle comes to an end fairly swiftly after the arrival of Cure Parfait, who utterly curbstomps the raven-armoured ikemen, and it is brought to a close with the new Finishing Move.
The episode ends with Pikalio/Giulio happier than he was before, and deciding to stay in Ichigozaka with his sister. The townspeople from earlier apologise, and Giulio makes waffles. Liège waffles. For auld lang syne.

MY OWN HUMBLE OPINION:
Every Atoner needs a cupful of mulled wine for Christmas. Surprisingly, many of my favourite characters in anime are Atoners --Ken Ichijóji, Towa/ilight and Shut, Ellen Kurokawa...-- Now feel free to add Giulio to the list.
I also adore his queue. He wore his long hair untied with that Venetian mask (making him a Long-Haired Pretty Boy), but there's something about young men with queues (low ponytails tied with ribbons) that I completely adore. And there's this angst. There's Giulio, like Clinton, having this redemption arc full of angst and proving his innocence. Atoner+queue+this angst=yours truly feeling completely riveted.
This Clear My Name premise reminded me of Copycat, a villain of the week in Miraculous who impersonated Chat Noir and committed several felonies across Paris to try to frame Chat Noir. As in this episode, the impostor and the hero were identical... but hey, Copycat looks and dresses exactly like Chat Noir, and is a stark contrast from his (Copycat's) muggle self Théo (except for the oral fixation that serves as the impostor's ID tag!), while the Giulio impersonator wears dark clothing, in stark contrast to Giulio's coat-turn attire change to a lighter wardrobe.
Copycat. Notice the lolly.
Real vs. Fake. Notice they look EXACTLY like two peas in a pod.
The only ID tag is the lollypop in Copycat's mouth (see above), for Théo sucks lollypops.
Théo (Copycat's muggle self). Notice the lolly.

There's Elysio pulling out all the stops by donning the most radass armour ever worn by a Sissy Villain across anime (What will Elysio's backstory be? And Noir's?).

See what I mean? A kilt in style, tights, raven wings, and an impressive phallic spear! That's some impressive attire to kick derrière in, isn't it? Eat your heart out, Shut, or at least eat that Hufflepuff scarf of yours!

And there's my OTP in winter attire for the first time (I <3 both of their trenchcoats, but especially Akira's, our bifauxnen looking like a real Victorian gentleman in burgundy!). And being as savvy both on and off the battlefield as always.

(Though I was slightly disappointed when the impostor turned out to be a regular, expendable rank-and-file mook. I expected it to be Elysio himself in disguise... sigh... Another disappointment came during the battle against Elysio, in which neither Macaron nor Chocolat were able to get the upper hand. Anyway, this is a Ciel-centric/Parfait-centric episode, also focusing on her brother --no twincest, just regular sibling bonding--, which might explain the occurrence of the Worf effect in this episode.)

I also enjoyed Ciel and Giulio bonding over Liège waffles, for auld lang syne... after all, it had all begun with a sibling feud over that treat. I will never look at Liège waffles with the same eyes since these character arcs wrap up.

One last thing I relished: Giulio making two garçons (a bifauxnen and an ikemen) at the KiraPâti this winter!

Next up is an Aoi-centric episode featuring... THE DISBANDMENT OF WILD AZÜRE?! AOI RETURNING TO HIGH F-ING SOCIETY?! AT LEAST AN IDENTITY CRISIS, AND A MUSICAL REVIEW OF THIS EPISODE, IN WHICH MAYBE...

IN NEXT EPISODE (42):

THE SHOW MUST GO O-O-O-ON!!!
THE SHOW MUST GO O-O-O-ON!!!
She'll top the bill, she'll overkill,
she'll have to find the will to carry O-O-O-ON...

...with the SHO-O-O-OW-W-W-W!!
The Show Must Go On!!!

PRECURE EDITION: THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE-DOWN

I was up for some Yukakira Precure crossover filk right now... something like the All Stars films. And a Yorktown filk set in this crossover 'verse with my favourite Cures in the leading cast... So I said to myself, why not?

THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE-DOWN

The battle of Clovertown,
2017...

CURE SCARLET:
Precure Chocolat?
CURE CHOCOLAT:
Precure Scarlet!
CURE SCARLET:
In command where you belong?
CURE CHOCOLAT:
As I say, no sweat.
We're finally on the field, we've had quite a run...
CURE SCARLET:
We red Cures!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
We get the job done!
So what happens if we win?
CURE SCARLET:
I return to my land,
and give freedom to my people with an open hand...
CURE CHOCOLAT:
We'll be with you when you do...
CURE SCARLET:
Go, lead your men!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
See you on the other side!
CURE SCARLET:
Till we meet again!

PRECURE BACK FOR THE FINALE BYSTANDERS (LIKE, NOBLE ACADEMY STUDENTS):
I am not throwing away my shot!
I am not throwing away my shot!
Hey, I am just like for fighting, I'm young, and all wrongs righting!
I am not throwing away my shot!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
Till the world turns upside-down...
PRECURE BACK FOR THE FINALE BYSTANDERS:
The world turned upside-down...

CURE CHOCOLAT:
I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory...
This is where it gets me; on my feet, the enemy ahead of me...
If this is the end of me, at least I have a friend with me;
weapon in my hand, a command, they will bend with me!
Then I remember my li'l sister's expecting me...
Not only that... my Yukari's expecting me!
We gotta go, gotta get the job done!
Gonna start a new era, gonna meet my loved ones!
Take wand, instrument, or gun!
BACK FOR THE FINALE BYSTANDERS:
What?!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
Wand, instrument, or gun!
We move under cover and we move as one!
Through the fog, we have one shot to live another day;
we cannot let one stray shot give us away!
We will fight up close, seize the moment, and hold it tight!
It's either that or have enemy blades pierce all through you right!
The codeword's "otokoyaku!"
BACK FOR THE FINALE BYSTANDERS:
Otokoyaku!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
You have your orders now; make it through!
And so, this new crossover experiments begins,
with my friends all scattered to the winds...
Ellen's in the Major Land, redefining self-expression...
CURE BEAT:
We'll never be free until we end oppression!!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
When we finally drive the foemen away,
Cure Scarlet is waiting...
CURE SCARLET:
Back from the HK!
CURE CHOCOLAT:
How did we know that this plan would work?
We had someone on the inside... yeah, that's right!
CURE GELATO:
AOI TA-TE-GAMI!!
A rockstar spying on these cadre goverments,
I entertain them, glean information, and then I smuggle it
UP!!
To my fellows' revolutionary covenant,
I'm running with the Pretty Cures and I'm loving it!
See, that what happens when you're up against the ruffians...
We're all f-ed up, and somebody's gotta shovel it!
Aoi Tategami; I need no introduction!
When you knock me down, I get fricking back up again!!!

PRECURES, BACK FOR THE FINALE CAST, CADRES
Left! Right!
Hold!
Left! Right!
Hold!
What!? What!? What!?

CURE CHOCOLAT:
After a week of fighting, a young man in a horned hood stands on a parapet...
CURE SCARLET:
We lower our weapons as he frantically waves a white handkerchief...
CURE GELATO:
And, just like that, it's over. We tend to our wounded, we count our dead...
CURE BEAT:
Yousei and humans alike wonder if this really means freedom...
MARIE-ANGE:
Not. Yet.
CURE CHOCOLAT:
We negotiate the terms of surrender...
I see Marie-Ange smile...
We escort their men out of Clovertown;
they stagger home single file...
Tens of thousands of people flood the streets,
there are screams and church bells ringing!
And, as our fallen foes retreat,
I hear the drinking song they're singing...

EVERYONE:
The world turned upside-down...
The world turned upside-down...
The world turned upside-down...
Down...
Down, down, down...

CURE SCARLET:
Freedom for our Earth and all Magical Lands!

EVERYONE:
Down, down, down...

CURE CHOCOLAT:
Gonna start a new era, gonna meet my loved ones!

EVERYONE:
Down, down, down...

CURE GELATO:
WE WON!!!

CURE BEAT:
We won!!

CURE CHOCOLAT:
We won!!

ALL PRECURES FEATURED + MARIE-ANGE:
WE WON!!

EVERYONE:
The world turned upside-...
DOWN!!!

And right, now I explain the cast... maybe this becomes a full-blown filk opera (surely only on Act One), CHOCOLAT: A PRECURE MUSICAL, whose opening song will be titled: "Not Sailor Uranus-san..." Imagine Akira in her muggle self singing: "Not Sailor Uranus-san, my name is not Sailor Uranus-san..." So of course she has to get Alex's lines... "How does a kind bifauxnen, expy of the first one in the genre, dropped into the middle of the latest spot of a decade-long series in which her kind was lacking, grow up to be a leader for attacking?"
Yukari would be a composite of Eliza and Burr. Which would allow for more angles to look at my OTP. So the next song... "Oneesama?" begins with Akira entering Ichigozaka (2016 Ichigozaka) and our intro to the rest of the cast unfurls. Lile Yukari and Akira having this exchange:
"Pardon me, are you Oneesama?"
"That depends, Ser. Who's asking?"
"Oh... well, sure, Miss.
I'm Akira Kenjo, right? I'm at your service, Miss...
I have been looking for you...
[···]
You're an orphan... of course I am an orphan!
I wish there was a war...!
Then, we would prove that we're both more than anyone bargained for..."
[···]
"Yo yo yo yo yo!
What time is it?
SHOWTIME!!!"
"Showtime! Showtime!!"
"Ellen Kurokawa in the right place for sure;
three pints of Sixth Ranger, but I'm working on four! Ah!
Those cadres don't want it with me,
'cuz I will pop them like popcorn pops until I'm free!"
"Oui oui, mon amie, Hope Daylight je m'appelle;
the Clever Princess of this set, you can tell!
I came from afar just to say bonsoir,
and tell the King 'casse-toi!' Who's the best?
C'est moi!"
"RAARGH RAARGH!! I'm AOI TATEGAMI!!
Up in it, lovin' it, heard of someone say COME AT ME??!!
[···]
Lock up your fanboys and horses, of course it's;
hard to have intercourse over those constraining corsets!!"
And then of course we would meet the models in Stella's agency ("Take Mrs. Stella, she sure is loaded..."); only Kirara is her biological daughter, but there were things I had to change... and of course Rinrin Akeboshi makes the perfect Peggy!
*Smirk smirk*
"Kirara's here!!"
*Smirk smirk*
"Yukari!"
*Smirk smirk*
"And Rinrin..."
Mephisto would of course be George III and have these impressive filks of my entire fave song in the musical, just because they're britpop sung like 90s show tunes with a British accent...

Returning to our filk... did anyone else catch Kuroro's cameo at the end? I just imagined the white-flag redcoat as Kuroro, as simple as that.
As for the other Cures I chose to play the revolutionaries... let's say I just thought that my fave Cures, all of them more or less Aces and made of badassium, fit the personalities and roles of the other male leads. Which makes, if the whole opera should be a thing, my heart ache a little for offing Ellen; I mean, I identify myself with her (as I do with the other revolutionary Cures in this AU)... and also, (both the historical and scenic) Jack Laurens is one of those sacrificial lions I mourn the most just because of the attachment invested in them... maybe I leave Ellen for dead and then have her return from the battlefield in the sequel filling some other slot? Or will there ever be a sequel, since I find the battles of the first act far more exciting than the second one's focus on statescraft and laws...?

IN THE SHADES OF DAWNING (YUKAKIRA SNOW QUEEN BUNNY)

With her more feminine better half held captive within an icy fortress (her heart a lump of ice and her mind a blank slate), will Akira Kenjó have enough power in her strength and her love to free Yukari Kotozume from her sinister captor?

Yes, that's the story I lull myself to sleep with every night since the wisdom tooth removal. So I've got already a YumiKuri fusion bunny of this Andersen tale (with elements of Anastasia --Romanova-- thrown in, Mikasa as the robber maiden, and Rainer and Bert as half-brother princes in a threesome with dashing stranger Annie!), but a Yukakira KKPCàlM version, with Yukari in the role of Kai and Akira in that of Gerda (which fits them like a glove), and a bit of a crossover with Ovid, Shakespeare, 80s lyrics (with AOI FRICKING TATEGAMI as the robber maiden, that's something to be quite expected!) and a pair of other Pretty Cure continuities... would be a purrfect way to celebrate my KKPCàlM OTP (and also my Suite Pretty Cure OTP, with whom I was dying to do something as well!!)!! The Ovid elements I will take into the flower dreams (a premise which also is part of my YumiKuri bunny!)...

So basically the cast is like this, in order of appearance:
  • The Snow Queen as herself
  • Yukari Kotozume in the role of Kai
  • Akira Kenjo in the role of Gerda
  • Miku Kenjo as herself
  • Mr. Kotozume as himself (Lord Kotozume)
  • Mrs. Shino Kotozume in the role of Kai's grandmother
  • Mrs. Kenjo in the role of Gerda's grandmother
  • Kaoruko Hanasaki, née Godai, in the role of the Springtime Witch
  • Tsubomi Hanasaki as herself
  • Momoka Kurumi in the roles of the rose on the witch's hat and the tame crow
  • Erika Kurumi in the role of the wild crow
  • Ako Shirabe in the role of the Princess
  • Ellen Kurokawa in the role of the Prince (Songstress)
  • Mephisto and Aphrodite in the roles of the King and Queen
  • Otokichi Shirabe in the role of the Chancellor (Tywin-Lannister-like position, being the father of the queen consort)
  • Suzu in the role of the Princess's Handmaid
  • Trio de Major in the roles of Kingsguard officers
  • Shut, Baron Salamander -and Olivier!-, Kimimaro Ijuuin, Prince Natha; in the roles of failed suitors
  • Yuuki Hayashi as a collapsing redshirt messenger (reference to Stenbocks kurir!)
  • Itsuki Myoudoin in the role of the Captain of the Kingsguard/Gerda (!)
  • Satsuki Myoudoin as himself (sharing the role of Kai with Yukari)
  • Aoi Tategami in the role of the Robber Maiden
  • The other members of Wild Azüre in the roles of the rest of the robber band
  • Cobraj and Kumojaki sharing the role of the Robber Leader (the way it sounds; as a discharged one-eyed soldier and disgraced foppish courtier who took to a life of crime and to each other!)
  • Mitsuyoshi Mizushima as himself (in the role of an overly concerned retainer)
  • The Elder in the role of the Wise Old Sage
  • Yume Mochizuki in the role of the Far Wiser Old Crone (also, the Snow Queen's nanny)
  • The Snow Queen's Ice Monster Guards as themselves
Flowers in the Old Lady's Greenhouse (tales taken from Ovid):
-Iris, on Momoka's corsage (takes the role of the rose on the witch's hat=also, Momoka's stark resemblance to Yukari causes Akira to utter a Freudian slip as her memories surge back!)
-Sunflower (Clytie)
-Hyacinth (early modern tennis version=links back to Yukari playing tennis)
-Brown Bulrush (Syrinx=faun changed to human "wicked assailant")
-Lotus (links back to Miku=gender of the royal child being changed to female)
-Narcissus

Setting:
Realm of Major Land -- Lands of Everwinter (The Hope Kingdom also gets mentioned as being on the southern border of the Major Land!)
(In Major Land lay the various towns of adventure; Ichigozaka, Kibougahana... A royal castle, the one in Suite Pretty Cure, is the centre of power... during the backstory civil war, Mephisto had a power base in a fortress on the western border, near the Lands of Everwinter; its ruin serves as the robbers' den)

The title of this project will be IN THE SHADES OF DAWNING, referring to a Genesis song (Harlequin) whose lyrics may have been inspired by this fairytale.

Excerpt:
Anyway, the two of them have already, baskets full of chestnuts, knocked at the Kenjós' door --there's still an hour or so before the curfew that requires Yukari to be home at least at sunset-- and made themselves at home; Akira will also take the chance to give Miku and Grandmother some nuts left over after she (Akira) and the heiress have had the kitchen for themselves. It's about right then when Yukari takes up the handwritten Kenjó recipe notebook and skims it for marrons glacés --candied chestnuts--.
"Akira! What about marrons glacés?"
"That will last until midwinter, we could in fact keep them 'till for Christmas," the bifauxnen agrees as she cracks a nut. "But we'll have to see to the nuts and the syrup today and mix them tomorrow; that will also give you enough time to get the spices from the estate kitchens..."
It would be jarring for Lord Kotozume to see his only daughter and heir cracking chestnuts by a commoner's side, but anyway, here they are, cracking nut after nut as the pot simmers gently on the fire. And soon the nuts are all in the pot, mixed with a spoonful of flour in the simmering water, getting as warm and soft as nuts can get. Meanwhile, Akira stirs them and Yukari peers into the notebook once more; soon the redhead has fished the chestnuts up one by one with a ladle and they're all cooling in a basket; time to make the syrup after the nuts are clean and scalded.
"Now for... half the sugar loaf?" the heiress inquires as she starts for the Kenjós' cupboard to fetch the heavy cone of sugar and the pincers to nip it off. Akira nods in reply as she watches her lady friend wave at her and start for the cupboard door. The silence is only broken by the crackling of the flames, the bubbling of simmering water, and a coughing fit. Yukari Kotozume puts her iris-embroidered handkerchief to her lips for a while.
"Are you all right?" the redhead, startled, turns around.
"Right... as rain," the other maiden's voice is slightly broken, reassuring Akira. "Just a spark from the fire." Then she gently opens the cupboard doors and takes up the sugar loaf.
If only they knew... It was not a spark from the fire at all, and that cough had not dislodged it; for it was and is a spark of the Snow Queen's mirror, that Mirror of Truth and Reason, which only shows reality as it is (remember it?), and which the wistful heiress has just breathed in, as intended... and, furthermore, that coughing fit has done nothing to expel the shard from Yukari's system at all, sucking instead the little crystal needle deeper in, into one of her lungs, even into her bloodstream, coursing --within the instant it takes for a young heart to throb once-- down surging rapids through a crescent valve, then rushing through a larger and more powerful one, shaped like an upturned bicorn hat... into the warm, rose-red recesses of the left ventricle, where, as the valve shuts, in a nook where two heartstrings branch off from one another, the mirror shard plunges, lodging itself there. Pretty soon, at least the left half of Yukari Kotozume's heart will become a lump of ice.
In response, the light-headed heiress feels a stabbing pain, like an icy bayonet, in the middle of her chest; and her good arm, her left arm, wavers with the same intense pain, dropping the sugar cone on the parquet floor, as she grasps the table with her right hand only, pale as her apron and gasping for breath. The pain will subside after a while, but the shard will still be there, gradually turning that heart into a lump of ice encased in steel.
Now Akira is understandably far more concerned than before, even turning as pale as her sweetheart. She is relieved as Yukari stands up, breathing normally, yet her face strangely pale and a piercing look in her eyes...
"Hoo hoo hoo hoo", a familiar noblewoman's laugh rings out, this time with a cold ring to it. "Why should I be doing this chore in the first place?" She gracefully kicks the sugar loaf, which Akira luckily picks up as Yukari, leaving for the estate and looking over her shoulder as she upturns the basket of chestnuts, replies with another piercing glare: "Keep on with those messy nuts, my dear peasant... let's see if I ever dare to come here tomorrow..."
Turning her back, the heiress shuts the door in her red-haired sweetheart's face, while Akira, stirring the syrup after having gathered the nuts, looks puzzled on.
The next day, after finally getting a familiar knock at the threshold and Yukari at the door, our red-haired shero gets surprised when the other maiden has brought no spices and says she will only watch, not wishing to stain her precious fingers or her precious dress --even though Akira's brought her the usual apron!-- with that sticky, messy syrup. So our redhead has to make that batch of spiceless marrons glacés all on her own, while feeling watched over and an icy presence at the nape of her neck.
Upon returning home to the estate, and being told by her lady grandmother to read those Shakespeare verses from Romeo and Juliet that she was meant to study, Yukari shuts the folio in the old dowager's face and replies with the objection that literature is too painful for her. "Even Shakespeare?" No reply but a piercing glare, leaving Lady Kotozume puzzled as well.
"Othello," the heiress finally replies, looking over her shoulder. "Iago's part." It sounds far more like a command than like a courteous request.
She delivers the lines coldly, with a sinister sneer that would even have taken the real Iago by surprise. "I am not what I am." "I much show out a flag and sign of love; which is but sign." "If the balance of our lives had not one scale of reason to poise another of sensuality, the blood and baseness of our natures would conduct us to most preposterous conclusions." "Do it not with poison; strangle her in her bed."
Then, wondering whether she'll cast Akira as Othello, Cassio, or Roderigo (all three are flawed: that clingy commander, that lush of a lieutenant, that foolish fop!) the next time that the redhead comes, she shuts the folio once more. The part of Iago is the best one in the frozenhearted maiden's eyes; an emotionless, ruthless schemer indeed. Everyone else, in both the play and in real life, is flawed in one way or another... because of their feelings. That is what leads the schemer to tear them apart and take on them one by one. Peering at herself in the bedchamber mirror right before going to bed, she admits that she is flawless herself. Just like Iago. Everyone else is made for pulling their strings...
The next day, Akira visits the Kotozume estate, to find Yukari in the drawing room with an open folio. "I had been waiting for you." She has been perusing many Iago-centric conversations in the play all morning long, to see which one would do best to trick that tall, mannish redhead with her skin so burned in the sun.

KEEP WARM AND CARRY ON

The following review is brought to you by Ellen Kurokawa.

Mahou Tsukai Precure still continues to be a pleasant series (except for the monsters made from objects: luckily, Spain has seen the premiere on Disney Channel of Miraculous, the first Franime ever to employ The Heartless trope!!! [Check it out!!]).

Today's review of Episode 5:
KEEP WARM AND CARRY ON

Two plus three. Two Precures plus three wizarding students with a vast potential to unlock. Let us see, only time will tell, if these three will someday become warriors of lore...

JUNE (smug): To put a kettle on? Easy breezy lemon-squeezy!

The Cures & Friends (still not clear whether the Friends will become extra Cures), wearing adorable kitty-ears riding hoods.
And their next assignment involves... A KETTLE?
Isaac brought the quintet to the icy Glacier Island and told them to gather some dihydrogen monoxide to fill the kettle over there. And then heat it up, put the kettle on, while staying in this place as cold as the palm of Elsa's left hand... enough to freeze their asses off! (Is Ondalina beneath this place??)

EMILY: My lips are... Freezing...
Her wand tip is an orange club... She reminds me to a certain degree of Alice Yotsuba... Alice Yotsuba as the Cowardly Lioness...

JUNE: I could make it if it wasn't so cold!!
Now where's your self-confidence?
Guess I've already got a fave character... the short-haired, tomboyish, rebel hothead with over-the-top expressions...
Notice also that June's tip is a diamond... a blue diamond... but she is nothing like Rikka... Could she be the child Ira and Rikka might have had?

Kay slips time after time on the ice...
Is her wand tip a spade? 'Cause all other card suits are taken up...

But Riko will not give up that easily.

Mirai suggested they played this Japanese winter game, Oshikura Manju, to stay warm. Emily and Kay joined in. Riko was surprised. June was not amused.

"Oshikura Manju, don't cry, even if shoved!"

Riko... is just recovering before another go at putting the kettle on.
A skeptical June looks on, raising an eyebrow. Should she try this Oshi-what's-its-name?
At first she's like: "I would not could not in a box, I would not could not with a fox..."

While Riko is putting her kettle on time after time, June watches the Oshikura players...

All three appear pleased with the game, and their cheeks glow rosy...

And thus, an eager June joins in, becoming ECSTATIC!!

The Three are first in putting the kettle on...

In the end, they managed to fill and heat the kettle.

Mirai & Riko have a Breakup/Makeup plot strand going on in the second half of this episode. But I'm still impatiently waiting for something more June-centric...

Isaac gets June & Co back to the mainland on a carpet.

On the villain front, we got to see Dokuroxy closer up:
Headlight eyes... the only facial feature seen so far looks rather sinister.

Furthermore, there appears to be some rivalry between Batty and Gecko. Tensions mounting similar to the Dysdarks' King's-Landing-style intrigue. I can sense that one of them is an upstart in a lower position vs. the veteran right hand... Dyspear had no proper right hand until Twilight was introduced and everything was basically cadres fighting for the vacant post...

I don't like either of these two Mahou Tsukai claimants, but I prefer Gecko already. He's your quintessential right-hand cadre in a powdered wig, which makes him look cooler! Still, I prefer the Dysdarks. And SHUT foremost.

BACK TO THE HERO FRONT...
Oh, and this is the Smartbook. The Linkle gemstones are inserted here.

The Headmaster gave the Cures this smartphone-like spellbook.

The Linkle is inserted in the top circle, with the garland (what is the pentacled bottom circle for?)

If you insert the Linkle Dia(mond)...

...and draw a baby bottle with the rose pen...

(It's uni-mare milk... unimilk, to cut it short.)

...it becomes a real drink for our baby fairy!!

Ha-chan with a white mo after her very first drink of milk.

The Cures found the Linkle Aqua (with ice powers?) on Glacier Island.

So far, we have only seen what the Aqua does if inserted in the Smartbook:
Insert the Linkle Aqua, draw a cloud, then a cup around it...

...and what you get is a cupful of Sky Drink.
I wonder what it tastes like (water? blueberries? smurf-flavoured ice cream? Powerade? peppermint? pineapple [like blue Suguses]? something completely untasted by us muggles?)...

At least Ha-chan loves the flavour, whatever it may be...

Three Linkles confirmed so far: nine to go.

And Ha-chan has grown a little... Now she appears to be 2 or 3.
It is implied that she will grow through childhood and into adolescence as the series unfurls...

IN NEXT EPISODE (6):
When Isaac falls ill, the class temporarily gets a substitute teacher, a twentyish hottie who turns out to be Riko's older sister Liz.

However, separated for a long time as they were, the bond between these siblings is not as it used to be...

6 CRASH COURSE MAGIC WANDS! THE TEACHER IS RIKO'S older SISTER!? (3/13)

The third magic lesson is today. But Riko was surprised when saw who the teacher was in the classroom! The teacher is... none other than Riko's sister, Liz!
Liz is only a student of Mahou School, but she happens to be very skilled at using her magic wand! Filling in for Isaac, who has fallen ill, it will be Liz who's teaching for the day!
And Liz's class work is to shape water into an image of your own liking with magic, then keep its form for 10 seconds!
Liz easily created an example for them, but neither Mirai or Riko are able to do it...
What's more, after Liz gave advice, Riko set off from the classroom.
What on earth is going on with Riko...!?

>Isaac suffering from lower back pain
(LBP ["lumbago" in Spanish]... a man his age... that is so obvious...)
>Riko opposes Liz's advice and leaves

To these mermaids that rarely leave their village and fear the outside world, these people from the surface are rather curious creatures. Cici (Cissy? Sissi?
