Die Wichtelmänner
The plight of the house elves has always fascinated me ever since I first met the Malfoys' Dobby as a tween.
As the plot grew darker and edgier along the decade, it became gradually clearer and clearer that house elves are a metaphor for slavery.
But still not bereft of the intertextuality, as seen by the fact that members of this species, like the Wichtelmänner who helped the shoemakers at night in the Grimm stories, can be set free if their master gives them a garment.
(Already the LORD dressed up Adam and Eve as He expelled them from Paradise to eke out a living... so is there a symbolism in here?)
We see posh pure-blooded households (Malfoys, Blacks, Crouches) forcing their house elves into submission that even leads to Stockholm syndrome. We see the rise of a liberation front, SPEW, especially for the rights of elves.
